A device includes first and second clamps each having an upper arm and a lower arm, and a cutting blade attached to one of the clamps. According to the invention, the upper arms of the first and second clamps are each provided with an upper clamping surface, and a directing member having a deformable cord gripping surface. The lower arms of the first and second clamps are each provided with a lower clamping surface, and a cord gripping surface. The clamping surfaces function to occlude the flow of blood through cut ends of the cord after the cord is cut by the blade, while the cord gripping surfaces function to prevent cord slippage prior to clamping by the clamping surfaces. Preferred gripping surfaces include deformable foam or resilient strips provided with teeth.

Umbilical cord cutting and clamping device

An umbilical cord cutting and clamping device includes two clamps abutted in a side-by-side relation and a blade connected to an arm of one of the clamps and positioned between the two clamps. Both clamps have an upper arm and a lower arm, and a hinge coupling the proximal ends of the upper and lower arms. The clamps are held in relative position by frictional engagement and by a latch means which is automatically disengaged when the clamps are moved into a closed position. Both the upper and lower arms include clamping surfaces for clamping the umbilical cord. The proximal end of one of the clamping surfaces is provide with a retention tab which retains the umbilical cord between the clamping surfaces; i.e., the tab prevents the cord from migrating proximally off the clamping surfaces and into the hinge area. The distal portions of the lower arms of the clamps include substantially vertical portions having ratchet surfaces having a plurality of proximally directed teeth which are engaged by a ratchet engagement means at the distal ends of the upper arms. The blade includes a cutting edge which is preferably angled distally downward relative to the upper arms. As the clamps are closed around a section of umbilical cord and clamp the cord, the blade extends between the clamping surfaces and cuts the cord, and the latch means is disengaged. The two clamps are separated from their friction fit while clamping the severed ends of the cord.

An infant identification and security system includes an umbilical cord clamp for being attached to the umbilical cord of an infant, a wristband for being worn on the infant's mother, a pair of information storage modules attached to the clamp and wristband, and a compatible terminal for reading and writing information to the storage modules. The modules contain distinctive identification information that is readable only by the terminal, and only after a predetermined password is entered into the terminal. A person wishing to carry the infant from a maternity ward is given permission to do so only after the identification information in her module is checked by hospital personnel for correspondence with the information in the infant's module. A pair of triggering elements are attached to the umbilical cord clamp for triggering a compatible alarm system when the infant is taken from the maternity ward.

Infant identification and security apparatus

An umbilical cord cutting and clamping device includes first and second clamps held in a side-by-side abutting relation. Each clamp includes first and second arms hingeably connected at a first end, and gripping surfaces arranged on the interior of the arms. A blade is attached to the first arm of the first clamp and project into a space between the arms thereof. A pair of side splash guards are attached to abutting first arms on either side of the blade. A pair of front splash guards are attached to the second ends of the second arms and extend toward the first arms. When the clamps are closed around an umbilical cord, the cord is simultaneously clamped by the gripping surfaces and severed by the blade. The splash guards prevent blood from splashing onto surrounding persons when the umbilical cord is severed. The clamps are separable after clamping onto and severing the umbilical cord, so that the baby and the placenta can be separated.
