A flash redirecting recoil compensator for a firearm includes a compensator body that provides a platform for the rest of the components. The compensator body attaches with a firearm in order to reduce recoil force and redirect the muzzle flash away from the site of the shooter. An attachment chamber and a discharge chamber of the compensator body are positioned through a top portion of the compensator body from a rear face to a front face. The attachment chamber fastens the compensator body into the firearm while the discharge chamber provides space for the discharging bullet. At least two vectoring ports, which are traversed through the compensator body and into the discharge chamber, redirect hot gas and unspent propellants away from the firearm after the bullet is discharged as the redirection of the hot gas and unspent propellants reduce the recoil force and provide a clear shooting sight.

Flash redirecting recoil compensator

A coupler having fewer individual parts improves manufacturability and scalability. The coupler includes a wavelength selective filter, a first port for propagating at least a first wavelength, a second port for propagating at least a second wavelength different from the first wavelength, and a third port for propagating at least the first wavelength and the second wavelength. The three ports are positioned relative to the wavelength selective filter. At least two individual optical elements are also included in the coupler. Each optical element is associated with one of the three ports, between an associated port and the wavelength selective filter. All optical elements needed for directing light between the ports and the wavelength selective filter are provided on at least one of a substrate and substrates bonded thereto.

A power monitor for a light emitter uses an absorptive material placed in the path of the application beam. The absorptive has a measurable characteristics thereof altered by an intensity of the light beam, the absorptive material being thin enough to allow a portion of the light beam sufficient for a desired application to be passed to the desired application. Preferably, an anti-reflective coating is placed between the absorptive material and the light emitting device. The absorptive material may be formed directly on the light emitting device or may be formed on or integrated with a spacer.

A broadband diffractive diffuser contains at least three levels, with approximately a phase shift of .pi. between at least two of the at least three levels. Such a diffuser provides light with more than two phasor vectors at the zero order. The presence of the more than two phasor vectors reduces the zero order diffraction efficiency at non-design wavelength, increasing the usefulness of the diffuser at wavelengths other than the design wavelength. Preferably, the diffractive diffuser includes a plurality of regions, approximately 50% of an area of the plurality of regions presenting a phase shift of .pi. at a design wavelength, approximately 25% of the area of the plurality of regions presenting a phase shift of 2.pi. at the design wavelength, and approximately 25% of the area of the plurality of regions presenting a phase shift of 0 at the design wavelength. Such a diffractive diffuser may be formed by logical operations between two diffractive diffuser patterns, by adding two diffractive diffuser patterns, or by pixel-by-pixel scanning.

Broadband diffractive diffuser and associated methods

A radially symmetric iterative discrete on-axis hologram has a high diffraction efficiency for a correspondingly small f-number. The radially symmetric hologram has a plurality of concentric constant radial phase fringes. Each fringe has a predetermined plurality of radial phase rings and each fringe corresponds to a predetermined plurality of radial phase transition points and a radial phase value between the radial phase transition points. The radially symmetric iterative discrete on-axis hologram also has radial phase fringes with a predetermined number of phase levels, at least two adjacent fringes have a phase level difference which is greater than one and less than the predetermined number minus one. The radially symmetric iterative discrete on-axis hologram is fabricated by determining a plurality of concentric fringes of constant phase with a plurality of radial phase transition points and radial phase values between the radial phase transition points for each concentric fringe. The plurality of radial phase transition points and radial phase values are repeatedly optimized to obtain optimized radial phase transition points and optimized radial phase values which maximize the diffraction efficiency. A radially symmetric hologram with concentric fringes of constant radial phase corresponding to the optimized radial phase transition points and the optimized radial phase values is then fabricated using known fabrication techniques.
