The present disclosure relates to apparatuses and methods that are useful for one or more aspects of a power production plant. More particularly, the disclosure relates to combustor apparatuses and methods for a combustor adapted to utilize different fuel mixtures derived from gasification of a solid fuel. Combustion of the different fuel mixtures within the combustor can be facilitated by arranging elements of the combustor controlled so that a defined set of combustion characteristics remains substantially constant across a range of different fuel mixtures.

System and method for combustion of non-gaseous fuels and derivatives thereof

Disclosed is a premix injector for mixing air and fuel and injecting the mixture into a combustion chamber. The premix injector includes an air blast fuel nozzle, a venturi, and a premix chamber. The venturi extends from an inlet to an exit which is in fluid communication with a combustion chamber. Importantly, the venturi has a jet deflector along its interior wall near its exit and on the side of the venturi nearest the exit of the combustor.

A lean-premix-prevaporization combustion system has a combustion chamber and a premixed injector that injects a hot gas, formed from the ignition of a lean mixture of air and fuel, into the combustion chamber. A pilot injector is mounted to the wall of the combustion chamber and injects fuel into the combustion chamber. Upon entering the combustion chamber this fuel ignites to form a fuel rich zone which stabilizes the flame in the combustor.

The present invention provides a valve and a low pressure drop combustor bypass. The valve simultaneously controls both the supply of air to the premixer and the amount of air directed into a large bypass duct. Air entering the bypass duct is reintroduced into the gas flowpath as dilution air downstream of the combustion zone. At low power settings the valve directs most of the air to the bypass duct, in effect bypassing the fixed area dilution ports, whereby the pressure drop across the combustor may be controlled at an optimal level.

The present invention provides a valve and a low pressure drop combustor bypass. An improved deceleration fuel control system and related method are provided for regulating fuel flow to a combustor of a gas turbine engine to permit deceleration as a maximum rate without risk of combustor blowout. The system includes a controller responsive to combustor air flow and engine shaft speed to calculate a minimum fuel-air ratio to sustain a combustor flame during a maximum rate deceleration condition. The controller then regulates fuel supply to maintain a deceleration fuel-air ratio at a selected safety margin higher than the calculated minimum to sustain combustion.
