A thermal dye transfer process, and intermediate receiver used therein, for obtaining a color image which is used to represent a printed color image obtained from a printing press comprising (a) imagewise-heating by means of a laser a dye-donor element in contact with a polymeric dye image-receiving layer of an intermediate dye-receiving element, thereby transferring a dye image to the dye image-receiving layer, the intermediate dye-receiving element comprising the dye image-receiving layer and a layer substantially opaque to light at the wavelength the laser is operated at, (b) adhering the dyed polymeric dye image-receiving layer to a final receiver element, and (c) separating the opaque layer from the dyed image-receiving layer. Preferably, the opaque layer is reflective, and most preferably specularly reflective.

A new color-forming 4-(4'-secondary or tertiary-amino)anilino-1-carboxamidonaphthalene dye precursor in a photographic material and process enables formation of a dye image by means of cross-oxidation without the need for a coupling reaction. The color-forming 4-(4'-secondary or tertiary-amino)anilino-1-carboxamidonaphthalene dye precursor is useful in a photographic silver halide material for producing (i) a dye image, or (ii) a dye image and silver image. The exposed photographic material is processed to produce (a) a positive dye image, (b) a negative dye and negative silver image, (c) a negative dye image or (d) a positive dye image and a positive silver image. New naphthoquinoneimide dyes are also described.

A color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursor has sulfonamido groups in the ortho position and para position in relation to the --NH-- moiety of the sulfonamidodiphenylamine and, in oxidized form, intramolecularly reacts to produce a sulfonamido-substituted phenazine dye. Such color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursors are useful to produce a dye image by cross-oxidation in an imaging material.

Color-forming para-sulfonamidodiphenylamines and their corresponding sulfonimide dyes are useful in imaging materials. The color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamines are prepared by condensation reactions. The corresponding sulfonimide dyes are formed by oxidation of the color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamines by means of a suitable oxidizing agent, such as the oxidized form of a cross-oxidizing silver halide developing agent.

A color-forming para sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursor has one or two sulfonamido groups in positions ortho to the amine --NH-- moiety separating the two phenyl rings of the para sulfonamidodiphenylamine and, in oxidized form, intramolecularly reacts to produce a sulfonamido-substituted phenazine dye. Such color-forming para sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursors are useful to produce a dye image by cross-oxidation in an imaging material.

In a photographic material for producing a dye image or a dye image and silver image comprising (1) a photographic metal salt, such as photographic silver halide, and (2) a dye precursor, improved images are provided by means of a color-forming para-sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursor having one to two sulfonamido groups in positions ortho to the --NH-- moiety separating the two phenyl groups of the sulfonamidodiphenylamine and wherein the sulfonamidodiphenylamine, in oxidized form, intramolecularly reacts to produce a sulfonamido-substituted phenazine dye. An exposed photographic material containing the color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamine dye precursor is processed to produce a negative phenazine dye-enhanced silver image. Alternatively, the exposed photographic material is processed to produce a positive phenazine dye image.
