A plastic container having a multilayer label applied by in-mold labeling during the blow molding of the plastic container. The label comprises a non-cellular inner layer, an intermediate cellular layer compatible with the inner layer and heat bonded to the inner layer, and an outer non-cellular plastic layer compatible with the intermediate cellular layer and heat bonded thereto. The label is positioned in a mold cavity with the outer layer in contact with the mold. When a hot plastic parison at molding temperature is expanded by fluid pressure against the walls of the mold to form a container, the noncellular inner layer becomes bonded to the outer surface of the container by heat from the container.

This invention relates to a thermoplastic, foam composition having enhanced heat-shrink capability by the physical intermixing therein of a minor amount of a second polymeric material having superior infrared absorbing properties. The intermixed composition is able to be foamed and formed into an oriented sheet adapted to fabricating heat-shrink tubular labels or sleeves, for example, having improved thermal contraction properties when subjected to infrared radiation. The subject composition is thus able to provide markedly improved heat shrinkage at lower temperatures than heretofore required for a variety of fabricated products. Polyethylene foam or polystyrene foam can be taken as the thermoplastic base material having a minor amount of a second polymeric material such as polyethylene terephthalate dispersed therein, the latter having a high absorbing capability for infrared energy. This invention relates to the treatment of plastic sheet material and especially co-extruded sheet of orientable plastic material which is comprised of film and foam layers which are continuously stretched in a longitudinal direction. The stretching is effected between a pair of rolls which are maintained at different temperatures and rotated at different rates of rotation to effect a cold stretching of the film-foam laminate to improve its shrink capability and lower its shrink temperature upon usage in various packaging applications. A preferred material is polyethylene which is co-extruded into a laminate of film and foam layers and which exhibits improved shrinkage characteristics when employed in the form of tubular sleeves for container labels or bands.

The method permits selective cooling of tubular plastic material as formed to provide for an exchange of internal cooling air through the central opening of the blow head. Air supply rings having outlet slots facing the tubing, as well as air guide surfaces of small axial length, are provided inside the tubing and spaced from the annular die orifice to serve to support the tubing. The interior cooling air supply rings have axially directed passages for the flow of cooling air while the exterior air supply ring or rings deliver air at higher temperatures to provide a substantial thermal differential between the tube surfaces as formed to provide a flare-top edge upon severance. Also, the method permits forming a foam-film composite of thermoplastic materials by the blown bubble co-extrusion process.
