A smoke deflector includes a pole, a handle on a first end of the pole, and a fan assembly mounted on a second end of the pole opposite the handle. A method for using a smoke deflector to blow smoke away from a smoke detector includes the steps of holding the smoke deflector by the handle, adjusting the pole of the smoke deflector to set a desired length, adjusting the fan assembly of the smoke deflector to a desired angle, positioning the fan assembly adjacent to the smoke detector, and turning on the smoke deflector.

The crimper has a pair of feed rollers to supply fiber traveling therebetween. The feed rollers rotate at a first speed. A pair of outlet rollers receive fiber from the feed rollers and rotate at a second speed slower than the first speed. A pair of side walls sandwich the feed rollers and the outlet rollers. A pair of floating scrapers are supported by move with the feed rollers, the outlet rollers and the side walls. Fluid is supplied to and ejected from the scrapers such that a fluid bearing is created at least between the scrapers and the feed rollers. There are two pairs of outlet rollers with a belt rotating about each pair of outlet rollers. For each pair, a first of the outlet rollers is adjacent to the scraper and a second of the outlet rollers is displaced from the scraper. A space between the scrapers defines a crimping chamber. The first outlet rollers are moved toward and away from one another, thereby causing the crimping chamber to open and close. To move the first outlet rollers, a hydraulic positioning unit selectively supplies fluid to opposite ends of the first outlet rollers with the pressure of the fluid supplied to the opposite ends being equalized. Equalized hydraulic biasing force is also used to bias the first outlet rollers toward the scrapers and to bias the feed rollers toward one another and toward the scrapers. Fiber produced by this method and with this device has superior crimp uniformity.

This invention provides cellulose ester fibers having an intermediate degree of substitution per anhydroglucose unit (DS/AGU) along with pigments which act as photooxidation catalyst. The fibers are useful as filler materials for tobacco products. The filter materials thus provided are easily dispersible and biodegradable and do not persist in the environment.

This invention provides cellulose ester fibers having an intermediate degree of substitution per anhydroglucose unit (DS/AGU) along with pigments which act as photooxidation catalysts. The fibers are useful as filter materials for tobacco products. The filter materials thus provided are easily dispersible and biodegradable and do not persist in the environment.

A bundle of cellulose acetate fibers is bonded together with a water-soluble fiber-to-fiber bonding agent. The water-soluble fiber-to-fiber bonding agent may include 60-99 wt. % of a water-soluble binder and 40-1 wt. % of a plasticizer. As to the specific components, the water-soluble fiber-to-fiber bonding agent may be a mixture of a water-soluble polymer and glycerol triacetate. The bonded fibers are wrapped in a paper having opposing ends secured together with a water-soluble plug wrap adhesive. A plurality of cuts are made to extend more than one half way through the bundle wrapped fibers. The plurality of cuts may extend more than one half way through the bundle without extending completely through the bundle and may extend from a plurality of different directions. Further, the bundle of wrapped fibers may have cuts extending more than one half way though the bundle from a first direction, and also have a plurality of cuts extending less than one half way through the bundle from a second direction, different than the first direction. If cuts are made from different directions, there is a distance between adjacent cuts made from that direction, and this distance should be in the range of 2 to 7 mm.

Disclosed is a novel tobacco smoke filter material comprising a filter element such as cellulose acetate crimped tow having at least about 1 weight percent of micro acicular crystals of a compound such as sodium carbonate present on the surfaces of the filter element.
