An apparatus and method are provided for characterizing a replica tape which has been embossed, compressed or cast on a surface of a material to be measured to replicate that surface. The replica tape is secured between first and second holding components such that a compressible surface of the replica tape is secured against the first holding component. A light source transmits light through the second holding component, the replica tape and the first holding component. An image sensor measures intensity of the light respectively transmitted through at least two measurement points of the compressible surface of the replica tape. A processing unit converts the measured light intensity transmitted through the at least two measurement points into at least two data values each respectively relating to a measurement statistic of the replica tape at a corresponding one of the at least two measurement points, respectively.

Apparatus and method for characterizing a replica tape

A fence/railing post cap system for use with a fence/railing post includes a decorative and utilitarian structure which enables removal and storage of a cap of the system to accommodate reception of beverage containers and the like within a base of the system and which provides for a pole with accessory structures therein to be mounted on the base by passing through an opening in the cap when the cap is in position on the base.

An airway clearance combines a force multiplying percussor and a self-applicator assembly. The percussor has an anvil, a hammer, a coil, and a pulse generator. The anvil has a force receiving surface and a force delivering surface. The hammer also has a force-receiving surface and a force-delivering surface, and is attached to the anvil such that the hammer's force delivering surface and the anvil's force receiving surface are mechanically free to come together or move apart. When energized with an electrical current, the coil forces the hammer's force delivering surface and the anvil's force receiving surface to separate. The pulse generator supplies pulses of electrical current to the coil.

Force-multiplying percussor and self-applicator system for airway clearance

A low cost calorimeter wherein a linear taper potentiometer proportions the current through sample and reference solid state light sources in a near logarithmic fashion. The position of the potentiometer slider is proportional to the absorbance of the solution in the sample path when the light intensity of the two paths is balanced. The light intensity may be balanced visually or with a simple electronic comparator.

An animal control system generates an on-off correction stimulus using a small transformer and rectifies the high voltage output to give an unfiltered unipolar voltage applied to electrodes as a correction stimulus. A small, efficient power isolation system. A programming signal can be applied to the electrodes to affect control parameters of the control system.

Animal control system

A shielding grid constructed of a radiation absorbing material for use with an array of discreet, non contiguous radiation sensors to protect such sensors from scattered radiation. The sensors each have a radiation sensitive area with a width and a length. In designing the grid a prototile having a prototile width and a prototile length is developed. The prototile width is equal to the radiation sensitive area width divided by an integer and the prototile length is also equal to the radiation sensitive area length divided by an integer. The prototile contains a pinwheel motif of radiation absorbing material contained solely within the prototile that forms a pattern when a plurality of prototiles sufficient to cover the array of discreet sensor are arrayed contiguously. The grid is constructed with the radiation absorbing material in this pattern.

A small, efficient power isolation system is disclosed. An omnidirectional antenna is disclosed that reduces authentication time.

The grid is constructed with the radiation absorbing material in this pattern.

A panel for radiation detection having a plurality of sensors arrayed thereon. Each sensor includes a charge storage capacitor, a radiation sensitive layer over the charge storage capacitor and a dielectric layer over the radiation sensitive layer. The dielectric layer has an adjusted resistivity resulting in a time constant &tgr;&equals;&rgr;&kgr;&egr;,between 0.050 and 20 seconds, wherein &kgr; is the dielectric constant of the dielectric layer, and &egr;,is the permitivity of free space. The radiation detection layer is a photoconductor, and the dielectric layer is, preferably, a linear segmented polyurethane.

The oxygen breathing system with programmed oxygen delivery comprises a breathing circuit which a user exhales into and inhales from and a source of oxygen which delivers oxygen to the breathing circuit at a programmed rate. The oxygen is supplied at a high rate during the initial period of operation and at a low rate during the remaining period of operation. An overpressure relief valve in the breathing circuit opens during the initial time period because of the high oxygen delivery rate thereby flushing from the breathing circuit the nitrogen initially residing in the lungs of the user and in the breathing circuit. As a result of the flushing, the oxygen content in the breathing circuit approaches 100 percent at the end of the initial period and remains near this level during the subsequent time period. The source of oxygen can be a chemical reaction which occurs when a chemical compound is combined with a liquid in which case the programmed oxygen delivery is achieved by metering the liquid that is added to the chemical compound. Alternatively, the source of oxygen can be a storage container of oxygen or a contained chemical reaction and the programmed oxygen delivery is accomplished with a valve having a programmed flow rate.

A large imaging panel useful for direct radiography is prepared from two or four discrete modules, or tiles, containing arrays of solid state pixels. In preparing the large panels, a protective layer is applied over the array of solid state pixels on each module to protect the modules during subsequent processing steps. One or two edges of each protected module is trimmed and polished to form a polished edge which is within a specified distance from the solid state pixels of the array. The polished edges typically are surface treated (e.g., by etching) to enhance wetting and adherence of applied adhesive material. Protected modules are then assembled on a flat surface to form a two-dimensional mosaic of the modules in a way that each polished edge of each module is placed adjacent to the polished edge of a neighboring module to form a gap and a precise separation between the pixels of neighboring modules which is the same as the separation between adjacent pixels of one of the modules. A curable polymeric material is applied to each gap and cured so that each gap is at least partially filled. A base plate is adhered to the mosaic by means of a curable adhesive layer which is cured. The protected mosaic array is removed intact from the flat surface and each gap between the protective layers of the mosaic is filled with the curable polymeric material to a level at least above the top surfaces of the modules, and the curable polymeric material is cured. The protective layers are then removed from each array of pixels to leave a uniform ridge of cured polymeric material corresponding to each gap. A continuous radiation detecting layer of a material such as selenium is formed over the modules to complete the large radiographic imaging panel.

Fabrication of large area x-ray image capturing element

A low average power animal restraining system and method has a radio frequency transmitter for generating a carrier signal, an antenna for radiating the carrier signa, a radio frequency receiver, adapted to be placed on the animal. The receiver has an animal stimulation mechanism for providing a warning to the animal in response to a signal received from the transmitter. Power required to operate the transmitter is reduced by (1) amplitude modulating the carrier signal with a low frequency signal having a low duty cycle, (2) discontinuing the carrier signal for periods of time, or (3) reducing the pulse width of the carrier signal.

Animal restraining system

There is described a system for controlling the movement of an animal relative to a controlled area delineated by a wire loop antenna. The controlled area may be inclusive or exclusionary. A frequency modulated signal is transmitted by the FM transmitter connected to the loop. An FM receiver attached to the animal detects the transmitted signal and provides an alarm signal to the animal. The loop antenna is untuned. Low radio frequencies are used and the carrier frequency deviation is large to reduce the systems susceptability to noise. The modulating frequency is limited, also to reduce susceptibility to noise. Integrated circuits are especially designed to permit operation with very low power.

A method for stabilizing an alkanol amine buffer against substantial degradation so that enzyme activity can be optically determined in such a buffer is described. Stabilization is achieved by adding a stabilizing effective amount of a stabilizing agent to the buffer wherein the stabilizing agent (i) does not inhibit enzyme activity and (ii) does not interfere substantially with the optical determination in the wavelength region of measurement.
