A railway car for transportation of motor vehicles. The railway car may be articulated, comprising two or more units. The railway car may have end doors which are pivotally attached to the roof of the railway car. Flexible seals may be provided along the inner and outer edges of the end doors. Ventilation in the side walls of the railway car may be provided by small diameter perforations grouped at elevations near the top and bottom of each level. The side walls may be constructed by a combination of load bearing side wall panels which function as shear plates, and vertical posts. Protection for the door edges of motor vehicles being carried in the railway car may be provided by providing a plurality of parallel horizontal strips of a relatively soft material along the inside of each side wall on each level. A flexible enclosure may be provided between adjacent car units. A heat-reflecting corrosion-resistant coating may be provided on the galvanized steel corrugated roof to extend the life of the roof.

Auto rack railway car

A pivot plate assembly for supporting vehicles over the articulation between pivotably interconnected railway car units, and allowing rolling transport of vehicles from one railway car unit to the next. Platforms are pivotably attached to respective railway car units adjacent their interconnected ends. A vehicle has its front end portion secured to one of the pivotal platforms and its rear end portion secured to the other platform while the platforms are oriented collinearly with respect to one another. The vehicle thereby maintains the pivotal platforms collinear with one another as the railway car units pivot with respect to one another. Accordingly, the pivotal platforms remain substantially stationary with respect to the vehicle supported thereon throughout pivotal movement of the railway car units to stably support the vehicle straddling the articulation between pivotably interconnected railway car units during transport. Bridge plates are slidably engaged to both of the railway car units and span the pair of pivotal platforms to allow rolling transport of vehicles over the articulation from one railway car unit to the next. Each of the pivotal platforms and bridge plates may comprise one or more molded polymeric structures having a ribbed bottom surface to provide light weight, high strength, and durability. Blocks or coatings of low-friction materials may be provided on the platforms and/or bridge plates to improve performance and reduce wear. To this end, low-friction blocks may be integrally molded into the lower surfaces of the platforms.

Pivot plate assembly for articulated railway cars

A pivot plate assembly for supporting vehicles over the articulation between pivotably interconnected railway car units, and allowing rolling transport of vehicles from one railway car unit to the next. Platforms are pivotably attached to respective railway car units adjacent their interconnected ends. A vehicle has its front end portion secured to one of the pivotal platforms and its rear end portion secured to the other platform while the platforms are oriented collinearly with respect to one another. The vehicle thereby maintains the pivotal platforms collinear with one another as the railway car units pivot with respect to one another. Accordingly, the pivotal platforms remain substantially stationary with respect to the vehicle supported thereon throughout pivotal movement of the railway car units to stably support the vehicle straddling the articulation between pivotably interconnected railway car units during transport. Bridge plates are slidably engaged to both of the railway car units and span the pair of pivotal platforms to allow rolling transport of vehicles over the articulation from one railway car unit to the next. The platform assembly remains in place throughout loading, transport, and unloading of vehicles. Each of the pivotal platforms and bridge plates may comprise one or more molded polymeric structures having a ribbed bottom surface to provide light weight, high strength, and durability.

A rail car having an end closure provided by a pair of sliding doors. Each side wall of the rail car has a main side wall portion which terminates adjacent one end of the rail car, and an upright ladder panel spaced from the main side wall portion to provide a vertical slot. The doors are guided for movement from a closed position across the end of the rail car to an open position in which the doors project through the slots. An upper ladder brace assembly mounted on the main side wall portion of each side wall is provided to support the upper end of the ladder panel. This upper ladder brace assembly has an elongated brace member which is rigidly connected to the upper ladder panel. The brace member is bowed outwardly to be entirely outside the path of the door so as not to interfere with the movement of the door to open position.

End door for rail car

A railroad car for transporting vehicles comprising a car underframe having side sills and supported at each end by a railroad truck; a plurality of spaced apart vertical columns having lower ends rigidly connected to each of the side sills; a first deck supported by the car underframe; a second deck horizontally located above the first deck and rigidly connected to the columns; a brace bay between two adjoining first and second columns near each end of each side of the car; the brace bay having a horizontal member with opposing ends extending between the adjoining columns at the location of the second deck; the brace bay having a first diagonal brace having upper and lower ends extending from the first column downwardly to the second column and a second diagonal brace having upper and lower ends extending from the second column downwardly to the first column, with the upper ends of the two braces being located about at the horizontal member and the lower ends of the two braces being located about at the first deck; a plate connected to the first diagonal brace; the second diagonal brace including 2 sections, each having ends joined to the plate and to the column; a strip overlying and connecting the second diagonal brace ends joined to the plate, and the first diagonal brace; and the horizontal member and the two diagonal braces being largely longitudinal metal tubes which are rectangular in cross-section.
