Method of installing a wireless security system

A personal security system locates emergency transmissions and tracks changes in location between successive transmissions. The transmissions are repeated automatically over a predetermined time interval exceeding five minutes. A plurality of fixed receivers are provided in predetermined positions in a protected region for detecting the emergency transmissions and a central monitoring station locates the transmissions from information provided by the detecting receivers. The monitoring station tracks successive transmissions and displays multiple locations as icons on a monitor. The icons vary in size based on relative transmission time and are stacked so any overlapping icons representing more recent transmissions are on top.

A personal security system uses conversion factors that exaggerate the influence of signal strength to locate transmitting communicators. The system includes an alarm center, portable communicators for transmitting wireless signals and a plurality of fixed receivers in known positions for monitoring the transmissions and detecting the signals. Transmitted information, including signal strength, is forwarded from the receivers to the alarm center. A transmitting communicator is located by the system using the known positions and received signal strength at the detecting receivers. Conversion factors that increase with signal strength magnify its influence, so strong signals dominate the locating calculations. In addition to a calculated location of the transmitting communicator, the alarm center displays the location of a plurality of the detecting receivers, selecting between alternative displayed information depending on a comparison of the received signal strengths.

Personal security system with weighted receiver locations

A security system having a communications link with a central control, including a local network responds: a) to central control when the central communications link is operational; and, b) to local control when the central communications link malfunctions. More specifically, the local network includes a plurality of receivers for detecting emergency communications, an alarm for issuing a perceptible warning and a local control. The local control notifies the central control when an emergency signal is detected and activates the alarm in response to direction from the central control. The local control also includes logic for directly activating the alarm when an emergency signal is detected and there is no response from central control. According to more specific features, the central control includes data for validating emergency signals and activates the alarm only after validation. The local control, on the other hand, activates the alarm without validation.

Security system with fall back to local control

A personal security system including features for monitoring guard tours and other surveillance by security personnel. The security system includes a plurality of hand-portable transmitters, a plurality of fixed receivers and a control station. The transmitters are actuated to emit radio frequency signals including a class code that identifies first and second sets of the transmitters. The first set is assigned to security personnel and the second set to system subscribers. The receivers decode the signals from the transmitters and provide an output representing the receiver and the received class code. The control station identifies the location of the transmission using information from the receiver output, and records the time of the transmission. If the class code represents a security-assigned transmitter, the control station reports the information as a security function, such as a guard tour. If the class code represents a subscriber, the control station initiates actions appropriate for a subscriber transmission.

A multi-sensor security/fire alarm system comprises a master control unit which repeatedly interrogates, e.g., by a multiplexing scheme, the respective inputs and/or operating status of a plurality of remote sensor units (e.g., intrusion and fire sensors). In response to an alarm or other off-normal condition detected by any of the remote sensors, the master control notifies an alarm-monitoring service which either responds itself to the detected condition, or notifies the local police or fire department. To prevent one alarm-monitoring service from taking over, without authorization, the alarm-monitoring accounts of another service which may have expended considerable time and expense in installing the system, the master control unit is mated with its associated sensors by a unique code. According to a preferred embodiment, each sensor comprises an EEPROM which stores a unique portion (e.g., a single digital bit) of a multibit security code which is collectively defined by the unique code portions of all the individual sensors and stored in memory of the control unit. The control unit periodically addresses the remote sensors to compare the 'distributed code' with the code stored by the control unit.

Multi-sensor security/fire alarm system with mated master control

A security/fire alarm system includes a plurality of event-sensors, e.g. intrusion and smoke sensors, each being identifiable by a unique digital address defined by a multibit binary address code. A central control unit operates to repeatedly address the sensors to determine their respective alarm and/or operating status. To minimize the cycle time required to sequentially interrogate all sensors, the central control unit operates to address groups of sensors simultaneously, each of the groups consisting of a sub-plurality of all the sensors. In response to being addressed, each sensor in an addressed group of sensors transmits a different binary bit or digit of a multibit digital response code which is defined collectively by the transmitted bits. The logical state of each of such binary bits indicates the general status (i.e. normal/abnormal) of the event-sensing unit that transmitted the bit. The control unit is responsive to the multibit response code to sequentially re-address only those event-sensing units that, through their respective binary bit, have indicated an abnormal status.

Security/fire alarm system with group-addressing remote sensors

A multizone intruder detection system comprises a supervisory circuit for verifying, from normal traffic or activity in each of the zones of protection while the system is disarmed, that each of the intrusion sensors is, indeed, functional. In the event one or more sensors does not trip (i.e., sense activity) during the disarm period, the supervisory circuitry inhibits re-arming of the system until the non-tripped senso(s) is 'walk-tested' to verify that it is still functional. According to the invention, a programmable timer enables re=arming of the system for a predetermined (preferably brief) time interval immediately following disarmig of the system. This feature offers the edvantage of allowing the user to re-enter the protected premises 'after hours' for a brief period of time without having to walk-test all zones of protection before re-arming the system.

Intruder detection system with passive self-supervision

A multizone intruder detection system comprises a supervisory circuit for verifying, while the system is disarmed, that each of a plurality of intrusion sensors is, indeed, functional. The supervisory circuit inhibits rearming of a disarmed system until it determines that each sensor has successfully operated within a relatively brief time interval just prior to the time an attempt is made to arm the system. A timing circuit, activated by a preliminary arm signal, operates to establish a time window (e.g. 10 minutes) within which the operability of each sensor must be verified (i.e. walk-tested) as a precondition to system arming. Preferably, the timing circuit is reset by each sensor alarm output, whereby the system user is given the full time window to walk-test each sensor. By virtue of the invention, sensor sabotage in a disarmed system can be mitigated.
