Prior approaches have deliveredOto a subject by inhalation, but the relationship between local signal changes and metabolism has been complicated by HO created in non-cerebral tissues. During a brief pulse ofOinhalation, this arterial input function for HO is negligible due to convective transport delays. Additional delays in the arterial input function due to restricted diffusion of water makes pulsed inhalation ofOeven more effective. Accordingly, ventilator system are provided to deliverOas a brief pulse to a subject. Subsequent MR imaging demonstrates delayed appearance of HO in the cerebral ventricles, suggesting that the arterial input function of HO is delayed by restricted water diffusion in addition to convective transit delays. Delivery as a brief pulse therefore offers significant advantages in relating MR signal changes directly to metabolism.

A system for controlling the temperature of fluidic samples includes a device having a first outer surface and a second outer surface which are parallel to one another. The interior of the device contains two or more channels suitable for accommodating samples. The channels lay on a common plane that is also parallel to the first and second outer surfaces. A temperature sensor is positioned between the channels along the common plane. A heater is thermally coupled to one of the two outer surfaces while a heat sink is coupled to the other of the two outer surfaces, thereby establishing a temperature gradient between the first and second outer surfaces. A temperature controller receives sensed temperature input from the temperature sensor and adjusts the heater in response thereto.

A method and apparatus for the analysis of blood or other liquids by mass spectrometry to determine the partial pressures of gases and other volatile substances dissolved in the blood or other liquid in a manner independent of the solubility of the gases in the blood or other liquid. A countercurrent membrane exchanger (CCME) is provided for equilibrating a carrier fluid with the sample of blood or other liquid, the output of which is coupled to a tubular direct insertion membrane probe (t-DIMP) type of membrane inlet mass spectrometer. The CCME preferably has complementary spiral grooves on opposing metal plates for the water carrier and sample liquids so as to induce secondary flows which greatly reduce the resistance to equilibration between the liquid sample and water carrier phases. The t-DIMP is characterized by the use of Teflon&#x2122; sleeves specifically to reduce noise introduced at the connection between the silicone membrane in the t-DIMP and the steel tubing for the water carrier, by the use of radiation shields to prevent heating of the silicone membrane and water carrier to allow lower carrier flow rates, and by the heating of the section between the ion source and the vacuum pumps specifically to improve linearity of the t-DIMP.

Membrane countercurrent exchanger and membrane inlet mass spectrometer for the analysis of gas partial pressure in liquid samples

The present invention offers novel equilibration methods for very high resolution, three-dimensional imaging of imaging of lung compliance and distribution of functional residual capacity (FRC) in the lung using hyperpolarized helium-3 (He) gas (HHe), and collecting local magnetic resonance image data therefrom. Using the present methods permits many functions that have been performed on a regional level for the whole lung using non-polarized helium, to be calculated for the first time from the local MRI measurements of local HHe, such as measuring volume or compliance.

Equilibration method for high resolution imaging of lung compliance and distribution of functional residual capacity

The present invention comprises imaging and quantitative measurement of lung ventilation, particularly in a human lung. Methods for quantitative imaging of lung ventilation, and the further provided systems and algorithmic tools therefore, comprise three primary components: the combined MRI ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) imaging techniques using hyperpolarized helium-3 (He) gas (HHe); the three-dimensional quantitative imaging of absolute lung perfusion (Q) and collection of local magnetic resonance image data therefrom to produce an absolute lung perfusion image data; and the algorithmic co-registration of the two image data sets, (HP-He MRI image of V/Q and MR imaging of quantitative perfusion (Q) in the lung). From the data acquired in the combined data sets and their spatial co-registration, absolute ventilation (V) is computed.

Quantitative pulmonary imaging

A gas measurement probe for measuring gas tensions in liquid. The probe comprises a tubing having one end adapted for connection to a gas measurement device, such as a mass spectrometer, a gas chromatograph, an infrared spectrometer or a Raman spectrometer, among others. The second end of the probe is provided with a tip having at least one pore formed in it. The pore is filled with a membrane material which eliminates water from entering, but admits low molecular weight gases. These low molecular weight gases may then be identified by the measurement device.
