A first heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) writer writes to a surface of a magnetic disk using during an initial time period. A second HAMR writer is configured to write to the surface but not during the initial time period. The initial time period extends from a first time when the disk drive is first used to a second time when a near-field transducer of the first HAMR writer reaches a first wear threshold. During a subsequent time period after the initial time period, to the surface of the disk is written to using the second HAMR writer and not the first HAMR writer.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording device with multiple writers that write to the same disk surface at different time periods

A temperature compensation equation is generated during manufacture of a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) disk drive using initial total currents supplied to a laser diode of the disk drive at different initial operating temperatures. The total currents represent currents for recording data to or erasing data from the medium. The temperature compensation equation is stored in the disk drive, and updated, during field operation, using a subsequent total current associated with an operating temperature differing from the initial operating temperatures. The total current supplied to the laser diode for a subsequent write operation is adjusted using the updated temperature compensation equation in response to the operating temperature at the time of the subsequent write operation.

An optical power level applied via a laser when recording data to a track of a heat-assisted recording medium is determined. In response to the optical power level being too low or too high, remedial action is taken to prevent loss of data on one or more of the track and an adjacent track.

An apparatus determines that phase errors have exceeded a threshold when reading data previously recorded to a heat-assisted recording medium. In response to the phase errors exceeding the threshold, remedial action is taken to prevent loss of data due changes in power applied to heat the heat-assisted recording medium when recording.

A method is provided that decides whether a region of data storage units in a data storage system should be scanned for defective data. A current region of data storage units affected by a write operation is determined and which select transducing head of the data storage system that corresponds with the current region is also determined. A scalar value that corresponds with the select transducing head is retrieved. The scalar value related to a condition of the select transducing head based on previously conducted performance tests. An incremented write count of the affected region is scaled by the scalar value to obtain a new increment write count. A defective data scan is performed on the affected region if the new increment write count exceeds a default write count threshold.

In addition, the data zone of the substrate surface may include an embossed servo pattern formed simultaneously with the embossed pattern of recesses formed in the landing zone.

A multilayer coating of fullerene molecules is deposited on a substrate, and layers of the multilayer coating are removed leaving an approximate monolayer coating of fullerene molecules on the substrate. In some embodiments, a beam generator, such as an ion beam, electron beam or laser generator, produces a beam arranged to break the weaker fullerene-to-fullerene intermolecular bond of the multilayer coating and inadequate to break the stronger fullerene-to-substrate association/bond of the coating. The beam is directed at the multilayer coating to break the fullerene-to-fullerene intermolecular bond. In other embodiments, the monolayer of fullerene molecules is formed by applying a solvent to the multilayer coating to break the fullerene-to-fullerene intermolecular bond of the multilayer coating.

An improved magnetic medium has a metal or semiconductor surface in which the surface of the magnetic medium has an approximate monolayer of fullerene molecules bonded to the metal or semiconductor surface. The bond strength between the fullerene molecules and the surface is stronger than the fullerene-fullerene intermolecular bond strength. The magnetic media can be used in the production of components for data storage system, in particular heads with magnetic transducers and magnetic or optical-magnetic discs. In methods for forming the fullerene coatings, an approximate monolayer of fullerene molecules are deposited on a metal or semiconductor surface substantially free of contaminants.

A method for lapping a magnetic read/write element on a slider having a shear based transducer is disclosed. The shear based transducer is used during the fabrication process to more precisely lap the MR element. The method comprises measuring the stripe height of the MR element and actuating the shear based transducer to move the MR element to a desired position relative to a lapping apparatus. The MR element is then lapped to achieve a desired stripe height.

A target of fullerene is placed with a substrate in a vacuum chamber. A charged beam, i.e., an electron beam or an ion beam, is directed at the target with a power adequate to emit fullerene molecules from the target and not high enough to form significant amounts of fullerene having a higher molecular structure than the target fullerenes. Fullerene is deposited on the substrate. Regardless of the approach used to deposit the fullerenes, the substrate can be heated during deposition to a temperature above the fullerene-to-fullerene disorption temperature to form a coating consisting of an approximate monolayer of fullerene.

A disc storage system includes a rotating disc and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider which is supported by an armature. The armature is used to move the slider radially across the disc surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc surface of the transducer. The slider includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc surface. As the disc rotates, the air bearing surface causes the slider to &ldquo;fly&rdquo; over the disc surface. Pads are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system and texturing is provided to a landing zone region on the disc surface.
