Systems, devices, and methods for interfacing with biological tissue are described herein. An example electrode patch as described herein includes a flexible substrate and an electrode array arranged on the flexible substrate. The electrode array includes a plurality of electrodes, where each of the plurality of electrodes is formed of a hydrogel. Additionally, each of the plurality of electrodes defines a raised geometry. Additionally, an example system includes the electrode patch, which is configured to interface with a subject's skin, and an electronics module operably coupled to the electrode array.

Electrode-based systems and devices for interfacing with biological tissue and related methods

A scalable, real-time, label-free, electrode- or optical-based cell monitoring system for integration into a cell culture incubator is described herein. An example system includes (1) cell culture consumables with integrated electrodes and/or optics for growing and monitoring cells, (2) incubator trays for consumable organization and recording, and (3) a system console, external to the incubator, for connecting multiple incubator trays. Without perturbing the cell culture, the system is capable of monitoring multiple culture attributes for each cell culture consumable simultaneously. These attributes can include, but are not limited to, cell growth, proliferation, morphology, media pH, or media oxygen. The system can support multiple trays, which permits monitoring dozens to hundreds of consumables simultaneously, including a mixture of consumables of various sizes. In addition to monitoring adherent cells, the disclosed technology can be readily adapted for monitoring of cell suspensions.

Devices and systems with integrated electrodes or optical elements for monitoring cell cultures and related methods

An example device for repairing a tissue is described herein. The device can include a flexible carrier layer, and a support member including a plurality of micro-protrusions extending therefrom. The support member can be at least partially integrated with the flexible carrier layer. Additionally, the flexible carrier layer can be configured to cover at least a portion of the tissue, and the micro-protrusions can be configured to mechanically interface with the tissue.

Devices and methods for repairing damage to a tissue

A neural interfacing device is disclosed. The neural interfacing device includes a microneedle electrode. The microneedle electrode includes a body having a void formed therein and a plurality of microneedles. The void surrounds the plurality of microneedles, and the plurality of microneedles are bent outward with respect to the body to form a three-dimensional microneedle electrode. Additionally, each of the plurality of microneedles is sized and shaped to penetrate a nerve epineurium.

Neural interfacing device

An example device for repairing a nerve is described herein. The device can include a flexible carrier layer made of a biologic material, and a metallic support member including a plurality of micro-protrusions extending therefrom. The metallic support member can be at least partially integrated with the flexible carrier layer. Additionally, the flexible carrier layer can be configured to cover at least a portion of the nerve, and the micro-protrusions can be configured to attach to a superficial tissue of the nerve.

Devices and methods for repairing damage to a nerve

An electro-optical stimulation and recording system is disclosed, including a substrate and a plurality of wells coupled to the substrate. The system also includes at least one electrode set disposed proximate a respective one of the plurality of wells, wherein the electrode set comprises at least one electrode configured to collect an electric signal associated with at least a portion of the respective well. The system also includes a light-emitting element set corresponding to a respective one of the wells and configured to deliver optical stimulation to at least a portion of the respective well.

Multiwell microelectrode array with optical stimulation

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for assessing electrically active cell cultures. Optionally, the data can be collected using a microelectrode array (MEA). For example, electrically active cells, such as cardiomyocytes, are cultured such that they are in electrical communication with at least a portion of the electrodes of a well of the MEA. The assessments derived from the disclosed methods may be used to reduce the effects of confounding variables in data obtained from an electrically active cell culture. The methods may also be used to determine a quantitative measure of arrhythmia burden. The methods may also be used to decide if a particular culture or set of data is suitable for inclusion in scientific and characterization studies. Also disclosed is a method of finding the global conduction velocity of an electrically active cell culture.

Systems and methods for assessing data collected from an electrically active cell culture

A neural interfacing device is disclosed. The neural interfacing device may include at least one microneedle electrode. The microneedle electrode may have one or more microneedles. The one or more microneedles may be shaped and positioned such that when the neural interfacing device is applied to a nerve, the one or more microneedles penetrate a nerve epineurium without any portion of the microneedle electrode penetrating any nerve axon beyond a depth of 500 micrometers.

Disclosed are apparatus and methods that provide the ability to electrical stimulate a physical system, and actively eliminate interference with signal acquisition (artifacts) that arises from the stimulation. The technique implemented in the circuits and methods for eliminating interference connects a discharge path to a physical interface to the system to remove charge that is built-up during stimulation. By placing the discharge path in a feedback loop that includes a recording preamplifier and AC-coupling circuitry, the physical interface is brought back to its pre-stimulation offset voltage. The disclosed apparatus and methods may be used with piezoelectric transducers, ultrasound devices, optical diodes, and polarizable and non-polarizable electrodes. The disclosed apparatus can be employed in implantable devices, in vitro or in vivo setups with vertebrate and invertebrate neural tissue, muscle fibers, pancreatic islet cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, bacteria, algae, fungi, protists, and plants.

Circuits and methods for artifact elimination

Systems and methods for creating a localized environment for a cell culture plate are described herein. An example system can include a dock shaped to receive the cell culture plate, and a gas distribution device positioned on the dock. The gas distribution device can include a frame including a plurality of sides connected to form an opening, an internal channel within the frame for directing a gas mixture within the gas distribution device, an inlet port in fluid communication with the internal channel for receiving the gas mixture, and a plurality of apertures in fluid communication with the internal channel. The plurality of apertures can be spaced apart from one another along the frame and configured to direct the gas mixture toward the opening.
