Methods and systems are provided for an emission control device for an engine system including a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) and bypass passage for the GPF. In one example, the system may include a converging cone to direct exhaust flow through a central bypass passage, housing a valve, which originates upstream of the GPF and eventually passes through the center of it (thereby bypassing the GPF). In another example exhaust flow may travel through outer passages, coupled between the converging cone and GPF and spaced around the central bypass passage, to travel to the GPF.

System and method for bypassing a particulate filter

Various methods are provided for operating an emission control device. In one example, a method for an emission control device including a catalyst and a filter comprises passively regenerating the filter, and adjusting, via a controller, a duration of active regeneration of the filter based on an oxygen storage capacity of the emission control device.

Emission control device regeneration

Methods and systems are provided for heating a catalyst during engine cold-start conditions. One example embodiment uses positive valve overlap to drive a boosted blow-through airflow through the cylinders of an engine. Fuel is injected with the blow-through airflow during the valve overlap, and also injected into engine cylinders outside the valve overlap. The catalyst is heated by the resulting exothermic reaction of the blow-through airflow with the combustion products and the injected fuel in the exhaust manifold.

Engine control method and system

A method for restoring exhaust purifying capability of a sulfur contaminated catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine. Catalytic converter efficiency is measured with a first exhaust gas oxygen sensor positioned upstream of the catalytic converter and a second exhaust gas oxygen sensor positioned downstream of the catalytic converter. When catalytic converter efficiency falls below a desired level, catalytic converter temperature is elevated and the engine is operated to produce a rich exhaust gas mixture to reduce the sulfur contamination. Then, to further reduce the sulfur contamination, the engine is operated to produce a lean exhaust mixture.

Catalytic converter decontamination method

A method of monitoring hydrocarbons concentration in an exhaust gas includes the steps of: sampling exhaust gas on a vehicle, isolating the hydrocarbons from the exhaust gas on a vehicle, and measuring the amount of hydrocarbons isolated from the sample on a vehicle and providing an indication based on the amount of hydrocarbons. A sensor assembly for monitoring the concentration of hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas of a vehicle includes: a hydrocarbon absorbing material placed in a stream of gas on a vehicle, a gas sensor operatively connected with the absorbing material and in the stream of gas and producing a gas signal, and a sensor controller connected to the gas sensor for receiving the gas signal and for determining the amount of hydrocarbons.

Assembly and method for monitoring hydrocarbon concentration in exhaust

An automotive internal combustion engine is equipped with a hydrocarbon adsorber for the purpose of controlling the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons from the vehicle's tailpipe. Regeneration of the adsorber is achieved by an electronic engine controller operating an air pump and a sample pump, using information from an exhaust gas oxygen sensor.
