A process for cyclizing 2,4-dibromobutyric acid (DBBA) to alpha-bromo-gamma-butyrolactone (BBL) which comprises contacting the dibromobutyric acid with a base at a temperature between 20.degree. C. and 100.degree. C. and a pH below about 4.0.

Lactone preparation by cyclization

Thiadiazin-5-one compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl and R.sup.2 is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aryl are prepared by reacting a thiosemicarbazide and an alkyl alpha-halothioacetate. Addition of a dialkylhalothiophosphate to the thiadiazin-5-one compounds produces useful thiadiazine insecticides.

Process for production of

5-Chlorothioimino imidazolidines are produced by the reaction of sulfur dichloride and a 5-imino imidazolidine in the presence of a rate determining amount of an acid acceptor. The 5-chlorothioimino imidazolidines are useful intermediates in the preparation of pesticides.

5-Chlorothioimino imidazolidines

Herbicidal 2-chlorocycloalkylthio urea compounds are produced by the 1,2-addition of an N-chlorothio urea to cycloalkenes. The N-chlorothio urea reactant is produced by the reaction of a urea and sulfur dichloride.
