An improved bearing assembly which may only be assembled when its principle components are properly fitted together is disclosed herein. Generally, the bearing assembly includes a saddle member and a bearing cap, each of which includes a main bearing receiving, semi-circular recess for journaling the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. The recess of the saddle member is flanked on either side by first and second alignment slots, and the recess of the bearing cap is flanked by first and second mounting shoulders which are asymmetrical in shape with respect to the axis of rotation of the semi-cylindrical recess, and which are insertable within the first and second alignment slots of the saddle member, respectively. However, dissymmetry between the first and second shoulders prohibit the first shoulder from being inserted into the second alignment slot in a manner to cause proper alignment of the semi-cylindrical recesses. In the preferred embodiment, the shoulders are both generally rectangular in shape, with one shoulder being longer than the other.

Crankshaft bearing cap location scheme

A rocker arm assembly for an internal combustion engine is provided which is lightweight and inexpensive to manufacture, which securely mounts and supports a pair of rocker arms and associated structures on the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, and which provides and maintains a supply of lubricant to the rocker arm bearing structures, valves and push rods. The rocker arm assembly includes a two part pedestal which clamps the shaft on which the rocker arms are journaled to the engine. The base portion of the pedestal includes a pair of positioning projections which position and support the pedestal so that the proper alignment of the rocker arms relative to the longitudinal axis of the engine is achieved and maintained.

Rocker arm support assembly

An adaptor (ladder frame 10) and oil pan assembly (14), including a method of assembly therefor, is disclosed for mounting on an internal combustion engine block (2) equipped with a lubrication system designed to receive oil for recirculation through an inlet port (22) in the ladder frame (10) offset from the center of the oil pan assembly (14) when the assembly (14) is mounted in one of two reversed positions. The oil pan assembly (14) includes an asymmetrically offset oil pan reservoir (27) and integrally connected sump pipe (28, 48) within the interior of the pan shaped in accordance with the intended position of the oil pan assembly when mounted on the engine. The shape of the sump pipe (28, 48) is selected to provide automatic alignment and connection between the reservoir (27) and the inlet port (22) when the oil pan assembly (10) and sump pipe (28, 48) are simultaneously mounted on the engine. The sump pipe (28, 48) includes, in addition, filter means in the form of slots (62) contained in one leg of the sump pipe. The ladder frame is characterized by an oil pump receiving recess 16 and internalized oil flow passages (20a and 20b) to further reduce assembly costs.

Reversible oil pan assembly

A cylinder liner is disclosed for an internal combustion engine including a cylindrical hollow body having a press fitted upper end and a stop located intermediate the liner ends for engaging an engine block liner stop to provide upper and lower seals for a coolant passage. The outside surfaces of the liner adjacent the press fitted upper end and the stop are formed to permit a settable plastic material to be used between the liner and engine block to assist in forming the coolant seal and to provide radial support to the liner to permit the lower 30 percent of the cylinder liner to be free of any direct contact with the engine block. This design also permits use of a smaller capacity cooling system and improves lubricating oil flow within the engine block.

A composite engine block is disclosed including a main frame containing plural cylinder liner receiving cavities interleaved with plural cross walls extending generally perpendicularly between the outer side walls of the main frame and an oil pan adapter or ladder frame forming the lower section of the composite engine block between the main frame and the engine oil pan. Each main frame cross wall is combined with a pair of pillars extending between the upper head engaging surface of the main frame and a crankshaft bearing support located adjacent the lower surface of the engine block, wherein both the cross wall and pillars are shaped to strengthen and rigidify the composite engine block and to facilitate metal casting of the main frame. Size and weight reductions are realized by engine coolant flow paths within the main frame which bring coolant into contact with only the upper portion of each cylinder liner and lubrication flow paths in the main frame which cause the engine lubricant to return from the camshaft to the engine oil pan along a path which includes the space between the lower portions of the respective cylinder liners. Lubrication is supplied to corresponding main and camshaft bearings along single linear supply branches which intersect with a main lubrication rifle arranged parallel to and intermediate the rotational axes of the engine crankshaft and camshaft.
