A bridgeless PFC (power factor correction) converter with improved efficiency is disclosed. The bridgeless PFC converter comprises: a first input terminal and a second input terminal configured to receive an input AC signal; an output terminal; an inductor set comprising N inductors, wherein a first terminal of each inductor is coupled to the first input terminal; and an output stage comprising (N+1) switching circuits coupled between the output terminal and a ground node.

A discharge circuit for an EMI filter capacitor includes normally-ON transistors. The normally-ON transistors may be controlled to limit current through them when an AC source is coupled across the discharge circuit. When the AC source is disconnected from the discharge circuit, the normally-ON transistors turn ON to allow current flow through them. The current flow allows the EMI filter capacitor to be discharged by a discharge resistor.

The apparatus may also be configured to control external current limiter circuits that are each coupled in series with a corresponding internal current limiter circuit and the string of LEDs associated with the corresponding internal current limiter circuit.

A switching regulator with frequency limitation comprises a switch, a current sensing circuit, a voltage feedback circuit, a control circuit and a frequency limitation circuit. The current sensing circuit senses the current flowing through the switch and generating a current sensing signal representative of it. The voltage feedback circuit senses the output signal of the switching regulator and generates a feedback signal accordingly. The control circuit compares the current sensing signal with the feedback signal and turns off the switch based on the comparison result. The frequency limitation circuit is electrically coupled to the control circuit to limit the switching frequency of the switch.

An inventive isolated converter which exempts the auxiliary isolation devices with accurate voltage regulation is disclosed. The converter includes the primary side circuit with a primary controller controlling the on and off of the primary switch and a secondary side circuit with a secondary controller controlling the on and off of the secondary synchronous rectifier. The isolated converter uses the secondary controller to turn on the secondary synchronous rectifier after the secondary current decreases to zero to generate a negative tail current and turns off the secondary synchronous rectifier at a reference tail current peak value to generate a reflected negative current at the primary side circuit for turning on the primary switch.

The described DC to AC inverter efficiently controls the amount of electrical power used to drive a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). The output is a fairly pure sine wave which is proportional to an input control voltage. The output waveform purity is ensured by driving a symmetrical rectangular waveform into a second-order, low pass filter at the resonant frequency of the filter for all conditions of line voltage and delivered power. Operating stress on the step-up transformer is minimized by placing the load (lamp) directly across the secondary side of the transformer. The present disclosure introduces a simple method and apparatus for converting DC power to AC power for driving discharge lamps such as a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL), an external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL), or a flat fluorescent lamp (FFL). Among other advantages, the invention allows the proper protection under short circuit conditions for applications where the normal lamp current is greater than safe current limit.
