A vortex particle separator adapted for use with a gas turbine engine includes a vortex tube, a plurality of swirl vanes, and an outlet tube. The vortex tube receives atmospheric air laden with particles. The plurality of swirl vanes are arranged within the vortex tube and separate the atmospheric air into a first flow of air having the particles and a second flow of air that is relatively free of the particles. The outlet tube extends into the vortex tube to define a scavenge passageway between the outlet tube and the vortex tube that receives the first flow of air. The outlet tube defines an intake passageway that receives the second flow of air. The vortex particle separator further includes a layer of material having a low coefficient of restitution on at least one of an interior surface of the vortex tube and a surface of the swirl vanes.

An inlet duct for a gas turbine engine includes a particle separator, a scavenge duct, and a layer of material having a low coefficient of restitution. The particle separator including an outer wall spaced, an inner wall, and a splitter located radially between the outer wall and the inner wall. The scavenge duct is coupled with particle separator. The layer of material is located on at least one of the outer wall, the splitter, and the scavenge duct.

In general, techniques are described by which to provide a turbine engine compressor particulate offtake. A gas turbine engine comprising a compressor may perform the techniques. The compressor may comprise a plurality of compressor stages, where each compressor stage comprises a circumferential row of stator vanes and a rotor. The compressor may also include an outer circumferential casing that defines a fluidic opening within or between adjacent compressor stages. The fluidic opening may be configured to receive particulate flowing and air through the compressor and output the particulate and air outside of the gas turbine engine. The gas turbine engine also includes a combustor in series flow downstream of the compressor, and a turbine in series flow downstream of the combustor.

A member may have a primary major surface and a secondary major surface. The member may form an array of apertures extending from the primary major surface to the secondary major surface. The array of apertures includes at least one aperture comprising two or more conduits. The axis of each conduit intersects the axis of each other conduit in the aperture. The cross-section of at least one of the conduits perpendicular to its axis may be circular. In some embodiments, an aperture may comprise two or three conduits.

An aircraft is disclosed having a boundary layer ingestion propulsor. The aircraft comprises an elongated fuselage extending between a nose section and a tail section. The fuselage has an upswept underside in the tail section. The boundary layer ingestion propulsor is positioned in the tail section. The propulsor comprises a fan radially encased by a nacelle circumscribing the fuselage. The nacelle defines a leading edge line extending from a top dead center to a bottom dead center of the nacelle intersecting an axis of rotation of the fan at an angle no greater than seventy degrees.

An airfoil of a gas turbine engine includes a leading edge and an opposed trailing edge defining a chord between the leading edge and the trailing edge, wherein the chord has a chord length. A concave surface is between the leading edge and the trailing edge, which includes a first portion proximal the leading edge of the airfoil and a second portion proximal the trailing edge of the airfoil, wherein the first portion of the concave surface includes about 10% to about 50% of the chord length. An erosion-resistant ceramic, cermet or intermetallic coating is on the second portion of the concave surface, which includes a coating leading edge pattern. The first portion of the concave surface is free of the erosion-resistant coating.

A microchannel heat exchanger (MCHX) includes an air-passage layer including a plurality of air-passage microchannels, a working fluid layer including a plurality of working fluid microchannels, and a sealing layer coupled to the working fluid layer to provide a working/sealing layer set. A gas turbine engine heat exchange system includes a first microchannel heat exchanger (MCHX) configured to transfer heat between a first air stream and a working fluid. The first MCHX includes a plurality of air-passage layers. Each of the air-passage layers includes a plurality of etched air-passage microchannels that are configured to allow passage of the first air stream therethrough. The first MCHX also includes a plurality of working fluid layers. Each working fluid layer includes a plurality of etched working fluid microchannels that are configured to allow passage of the working fluid therethrough.

A gas turbine engine heat exchange system including a first multi-width channel heat exchanger (MWCHX) configured to transfer heat between a first air stream and a heat transfer fluid. The first MWCHX includes a first plurality of air-passage mini-channels configured to allow passage of the first air stream therethrough, where each air-passage channel has an air-channel width and an air-channel length greater than the air-channel width. The MWCHX also includes a first plurality of heat transfer fluid channels configured to allow passage of the heat transfer fluid therethrough, where each heat transfer fluid channel has a heat transfer channel width and a heat transfer channel length greater than the heat transfer channel width. The heat transfer channel width is less than the air-channel width.

Systems and methods for suppressing infrared radiation generated by a turbine engine. A system comprises a primary assembly having a center body, a plurality of vanes extending from the center body, an outer radial duct with the plurality of vanes extending therethrough, a structural baffle, and a mixer. The primary assembly is disposed in the exhaust flow path of a turbine engine and encased in ducting and/or an airfoil. An air flow path defined between the center body and outer radial duct is axially spit by an interface rim and flow segregator. The flow segregator segregates engine core flow from ambient air flow.

An improved system, apparatus and method for intercooling a turbo fan engine, and more specifically, a system for intercooling a turbo fan engine employing a secondary bypass duct that minimizes pressure losses. The secondary bypass duct is radially inwardly disposed from a fan bypass duct and receives fan bypass air through an inlet. The portion of fan bypass air flows through one or more microchannel or minichannel heat exchangers. The secondary bypass duct has an outlet in communication with the bypass air stream downstream of the throat of a fan bypass nozzle. The secondary bypass air is accelerated at the exit to create thrust.

A gas turbine engine variable porosity combustor liner has a laminated alloy structure. The laminated alloy structure has combustion chamber facing holes on one side and cooling plenum facing holes on a radially opposite side. The combustion chamber facing holes are in fluid communication with the cooling plenum facing holes via axially and circumferentially extending flow passages sandwiched between metal alloy sheets of the laminated alloy structure. Porous zones having respective different cooling flow amounts are formed in the laminated allow structure based on at least one of an arrangement of the combustion chamber facing holes, an arrangement of the cooling plenum facing holes, and an arrangement of the flow passages.
