A protective sports helmet that is molded from a shock absorbing foam. The helmet is preferably an single, homogenous piece of injection molded foam. An insert plate can be positioned near the user's forehead at the top and forward portion of the helmet. The purpose of the insert plate is to simulate the hardness of the user's head for heading a ball. The helmet can head the ball without the injury to the head and the brain as potentially encountered without protection. The soft-shell also minimizes injuries on other parts of the body that are struck by the helmet. The helmet can be utilized for football and other contact sports. Additional external components such as metal or plastic inserts can be inset molded into the foam. The purpose of these inserts is to improve stability and allow for attachment of face guards and chin straps.

An anhydrous 5-aminotetrazole or &ldquo;5-AT&rdquo; based gas generating composition for use in passive restraint devices, such as air bags and a method of preparing the same that is devoid of metal oxides. The gas generating composition includes 5-AT with a blend of oxidizers such as potassium perchlorate and potassium nitrate. This gas generating composition is devoid of metal oxides, such as copper oxide or iron oxide, which form an insoluble slag when ignited. After ignition, the combustion products of the gas generating composition can be filtered with a filter assembly that includes a ceramic blanket. The ceramic blanket preferably includes an aluminum oxide and a silicon oxide.

Metal oxide-free 5-aminotetrazole-based gas generating composition

An ammonium nitrate and paraffinic material based gas generating composition is provided. The gas generating composition includes ammonium nitrate as a oxidizer, mixed with a paraffinic material as a fuel. Examples of paraffinic material include paraffin wax, and broadly includes polyolefins. Polyolefins include polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene. Additionally, as alternatives, the gas generating composition of the present invention can also include a small quantity of magnesium stearate, potassium perchlorate or alternatively, RDX. The ammonium nitrate oxidizer, the paraffinic material fuel and the additional alternative components are combined and mixed in a predetermined stoichiometric ratio. The gas generating composition is devoid of metal oxides and produces virtually no particulate and slag upon ignition. It also produces an acceptable, low level of undesirable trace effluents such as carbon monoxide, and nitric oxide, both of which are inherently present in nonazide gas generating compositions. The gas generating composition is environmentally friendly after the deployment of the gas generant and abrasive damage to the tooling used in the manufacture of the gas generating composition is minimized.

Ammonium nitrate and paraffinic material based gas generating propellants

A method is provided to ascertain the total number of cells per unit volume of a cell specimen in an apparatus which does not measure the volume of a suspension containing the specimen as it is being analyzed. The method includes mixing a suspension of a known quantity of particles having a first light scatter signal with a known volume of a cell specimen having a second light scatter signal different from the first light scatter signal to obtain a suspension having a concentration of particles per specimen volume, passing each of said particles and each cell in said cell specimen, in turn, through a light beam, each of said particles and cells producing at least one forward light scattering pattern, counting the number of cells and the number of particles in a portion of said suspension, and determining the total number of cells per unit volume of the specimen. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method further includes correlating the light scattering pattern and fluorescence signal of the particles to a predetermined ratio which represents a threshold of minimum instrument performance and adjusting, if the predetermined ratio has not been attained, the operation of said instrument, while the particles are within the incident beam of light, until the measured ratio reaches said predetermined ratio whereby the instrument is analyzing both particles and cells in said cell suspension.

Method and materials for determining particle count in a flow cytometer

A flow cytometer includes a plurality of detectors for providing voltage pulse signals over a four decade range as particles pass through an illuminated detection station. Each voltage pulse signal is processed and provided to a first sample and hold for storage. Thereafter, the value in the first sample and hold is amplified by one or thirty-two, depending upon its magnitude, and stored in a second sample and hold for subsequent provision to a sixteen bit analog to digital convertor (ADC), one signal at a time. The first sample and hold is then free to store a new value while the old value is awaiting provision to the ADC. The ADC converts the signal received from the second sample and hold to a fifteen bit digital signal and uses the sixteenth bit to manifest whether the signal stored in the second sample and hold was amplified by thirty-two.
