A moth type rolling cutter drill bit has a plurality of rolling cutters mounted on legs, each rolling cutter having a back face portion and a gage face portion, and a high velocity fluid nozzle which directs a stream of high velocity fluid toward the cutter. Each cutter has a row of gage teeth to cut the gage of the borehole, and at least one of the cutters has a plurality of flow channels spaced apart around its gage face portion to provide fluid communication from the back face of the cutter and between and around pairs of adjacent gage teeth. Each flow channel is inclined at an angle to a radius of the cutter so as to be oriented towards the stream of fluid from the high velocity nozzle as the teeth adjacent to the flow channel engage the formation being drilled.

Flow channels for tooth type rolling cutter drill bits

A tool (400) is disclosed for use in recovering gas from a gas well without the production of water as well. The tool (400) uses a member, such as plurality of vertically stacked balls (430) which are lighter than water to close a channel 422 when the water level (432) exceeds a certain level. As gas accumulates about the balls, the water level 432 will be moved downwardly, eventually causing the balls to move out of engagement with the seal surface (424), opening the channel (422) for passage of the gas upwardly for recovery. As the water level rises, the balls will again seal against the seal surface (424).

Downhole gas separator

An improved pump tool (10, 110, 200) is provided for lifting oil from within a casing 18 of a well. The gas in the well provides the lifting action. The pump tool includes a body (22) which is preferably formed of ABS plastic. The body defines an upper chamber (24) and a lower chamber (26) which is connected through a hydrostatically operated valve (44). The plastic body weighs less, is chemically resistant and reduces the risk of spark and explosion.

Pump tool

A seal assembly (46) for a rotary drill bit (10) having a pressure balanced lubrication system is mounted in a pocket (48) between a journal (16) and a roller cutter (18). The seal assembly (46) has a pair of rigid seal rings (50, 52) in sliding sealing contact with each other and a pair of elastomeric seal rings (54, 56) in side by side relation sealing against the inner peripheral surfaces (62, 64) of the rigid seal rings (50, 52) for continuously urging the sealing faces (58, 60) of the rigid seal rings (50, 52) into sliding sealing contact. The pressure balanced lubrication system has a pressure compensating diaphragm (38) and lubricant passages (40, 42, 44) extending directly from the lubricant reservoir (35) to the lubricant chamber (48A) in the pocket (48) for minimizing fluid pressure differentials between the lubricant chamber (48A) and the drilling fluid chamber (48B). Drilling fluid in the drilling fluid chamber (48B) acts against the rear faces (63, 65) of the metal seal rings (50, 52) to hold the sealing faces (58, 60) in sliding sealing contact.

Seal assembly for roller cutter drill bit having a pressure balanced

A seal assembly (46) for a rotary drill bit (10) having a pressure balanced lubrication system is mounted in a pocket (48) between a journal (16) and a roller cutter (18). The seal assembly (46) has a pair of rigid seal rings (50,52) in sliding sealing contact with each other and a pair of elastomeric seal rings (54,56) in side by side relation sealing against the inner peripheral surfaces (62,64) of the rigid seal rings (50, 52) for continuously urging the sealing faces (58, 60) of the rigid seal rings (50, 52) into sliding sealing contact. The pressure balanced lubrication system has a pressure compensating diaphragm (38) and lubricant system has a pressure compensating diaphragm (38) and lubricant passages (40, 42, 44) extending directly from the lubricant reservoir (35) to the lubricant chamber (48A) in the pocket (48) for minimizing fluid pressure differentials between the lubricant chamber (48A) and the drilling fluid chamber (48B). Drilling fluid in the drilling fluid chamber (48B) acts against the rear faces (63, 65) of the metal seal rings (50, 52) to hold the sealing faces (58, 60) in sliding sealing contact.

A rotary drill bit (10) having a roller cutter (28) retained on a journal (24) by an externally threaded retainer ring (52) mounted within an annular groove (48) in the journal (24). The radii (R1, R2) formed at the inner and outer corners of the groove (48) are designed by suitable formulas to provide adequate strength for the journal (24) including the flange (50) adjacent the groove (48).

Means for mounting a roller cutter on a drill bit

An elongate, vice-like hand tool including an elongate case with front, central and rear hand-grip portions, a work-engaging head at the front end of the case and including fixed and movable parts, an elongate tension member having a front end coupled with a movable part of the head and extending rearward through the central portion to the rear portion of the case, a toggle mechanism in the rear portion of the case including a longitudinally shiftable bar with a front end coupled with the rear end of the member, a manually engageable first lever arm with a front end pivoted to the case and shiftable from an actuated position adjacent the case to an actuated position where its rear end is moved laterally from the case, a second lever arm with a front end pivoted to the first arm rearward of its pivotal axis and means releasably establishing driving engagement with the bar and coupled with the rear end of the second arm, said means releases driving engagement with the bar when the first arm is in its fully unactuated position whereby the bar and its related movable part can be shifted to adjust the head to engage a piece of work preparatory to moving the first arm to its actuated position; the toggle mechanism is such that when the first arm is moved from its unactuated to its actuated position, the bar and its related tension member are moved axially rearward in and through the case.
