Data can be streamed from a server to a client via an established connection. Commands (e.g., commands to navigate the streamed data) can be communicated to the server and streaming can continue (possibly from a different location) without breaking the connection. In one implementation, the connection is an HTTP 1.1 (HyperText Transfer Protocol version 1.1) connection.

Communicating via a connection between a streaming server and a client without breaking the connection

An implementation, as described herein, facilitates fast start-up of a new media stream while mitigating and in some implementations, avoiding temporal interruption (i.e., 'stutter') of the presentation of that new media stream. At least one implementation, described herein, measures a rate at which a multimedia stream is received at a downstream component configured to present the multimedia to a user; and, ascertains a duration of time to buffer the received multimedia before presentation thereof, at least in part utilizing the measured rate.

Methods and systems for presentation of media obtained from a media stream

Systems and methods for midstream determination of varying available bandwidth for streaming content between two network entities are described. During content streaming, a client requests a server to surge the content transmission rate. One or more bandwidth measurements are taken during the surge to determine if the increased transmission rate can be adequately managed. If the increased transmission rate can be adequately managed, the client may request the server to transmit remaining content at a transmission rate that is not greater than the increased, or surged, transmission rate. In a multi-bitrate file scenario, the surge rate may be higher than the rate of the fastest useable stream. In such a case, the fastest useable stream is selected. If the increased transmission rate is not suitable for future transmission, then the rate may remain at the original transmission rate.

Midstream determination of varying bandwidth availability

A digital communications network comprises a plurality of network hosts connected to communicate using an ATM network. Each network host uses policies (configured by the network administrator) to control an IP/ATM protocol layer. Based on these policies, the IP/ATM protocol layer classifies submitted IP packets and establishes and manages ATM connections having parameters appropriate for each class of traffic. By configuring the policies, the network administrator can tune the hosts to optimally use network resources. The resources of primary concern are available bandwidth and connection setup capacity. In the simplest case, the IP/ATM protocol layer classifies packets submitted from the IP network protocol as data traffic or control traffic based on packet size. Generally, large IP packets are classified as data traffic, while smaller IP packets are classified as control traffic. Data traffic is sent over the ATM network using ATM connections having relatively high bandwidths and relatively short time-outs. Control traffic is sent over the ATM network using ATM connections having relatively low bandwidths and relatively long time-outs.

IP/ATM network adaptation

A method and apparatus are described for enabling a first node, which utilizes a first naming protocol, to obtain an network address of another node from a naming service that does not provide addresses in accordance with the first naming protocol. A network embodying the present invention includes a naming proxy agent. A first node in the network obtains network addresses corresponding to node names according to a first naming protocol, and a second node conducts network naming operations according to a second naming protocol that is incompatible with the first naming protocol. As a result, the first node cannot by itself obtain the address of the second node by means of a node name query under the first naming protocol. However, the naming proxy agent receives a first naming query transmitted by the first node according to the first naming protocol that includes the name of the second node. The naming proxy agent converts the first naming query into a second naming query that also includes the registered name. The naming proxy agent transmits the second naming query according to the second naming protocol.
