A sensing assembly suitable for detecting both a first event which involves the presence of an electrolyte and a second event which does not involve the presence of an electrolyte, and for distinguishing between them. The assembly comprises a first conductor and a second conductor which is electrically insulated from the first conductor in the absence of both first and second events but becomes electrically connected to the first conductor by either an ionic connection in the presence of a first event or an electronic connection in the presence of a second event. The assembly also comprises a sensing apparatus of determining whether the connection is ionic or electronic. The assembly is useful for detecting leaks of hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, and water in storage tanks.

An apparatus for applying a sleeve on a pipe comprises a dispenser for wrapping material and guides which define the path followed by the dispenser around the pipe. The guides are held on the pipe so that they are immovable as the sleeve is formed.

Disclosed is a wraparound protective closure in sheet form having a specially profiled transverse-edge which is enveloped when the closure is overlappingly wrapped around an elongate substrate and a method of protecting an elongate substrate using said closure. Repeating structural units along the profiled transverse-edge comprise spoiler-edges which run at right angles to the transverse direction of the profiled transverse-edge and cause air trapped along the enveloped, profiled transverse-edge to form into discrete pockets away from the spoiler-edges when the closure is overlappingly wrapped around the elongate substrate instead of forming a continuous channel along the enveloped edge. The wraparound closure is preferably a dimensionally-recoverable wraparound closure, most preferably a heat-shrinkable wraparound closure, and especially a closure comprised of a polymeric composition.

Wraparound protective closure

A method for permanently terminating pipelines by insertion of an adhesive coated, molded plug housing containing a biasing member which is typically a spring. The molded plug housing, or the spring, or both, are of heat-recoverable materials, i.e. materials which have been formed into a shape, subsequently deformed to a reduced diameter, and which recover towards their original heat stable shape on application of heat alone. The plug is heated to recover to or toward the heat stable greater-diameter shape thereby exerting pressure against the pipeline walls, forcing the adhesive into intimate contact with the inner surfaces of the pipeline, and thus affecting a permanent seal. The adhesive is preferably of the hot-melt type.
