A timed-release slip system includes a plurality of slips each having a lateral tongue. The system further includes a cone having a track subsystem, the track subsystem configured to retain the plurality of slips during running and setting while allowing longitudinal motion of the slip in parallel to a longitudinal axis of the cone while being retrieved. Finally, the system includes a slip ring configured to pull one or more of the plurality of slips before a different one or more of the plurality of slips. A method for setting and releasing a slip system, includes driving a plurality of slips into a cone having a track subsystem configured to retain the plurality of slips during running and setting against a radially outwardly positioned structure, timing release of the plurality of slips, allowing longitudinal motion of the slips in parallel to a longitudinal axis of the cone while being released.

Slip system, method and borehole system

A downhole tool, a nozzle assembly for the downhole tool and a nozzle. The nozzle assembly includes an orifice in a housing of the downhole tool. The orifice has a housing groove. A nozzle is insertable into the orifice, the nozzle including a nozzle groove. A release member secures the nozzle to the housing by disposing a first portion of the release member in the housing groove and a second portion of the release member in the nozzle groove. The first portion is removable from the second portion upon applying a force to the nozzle above a release threshold. The nozzle includes a body having an outlet end, a nozzle groove on a surface of the body for receiving a release member to secure the nozzle within a housing, and a seal groove for isolating the nozzle groove from an environment at the outlet end.

A method of manufacturing a valve of a tool for use downhole includes changing a flow characteristic of the valve. A load is applied to a first nozzle secured in a housing of the valve via a first release member, wherein a magnitude of the load is greater than a release threshold of the first release member, to release the first release member. The first nozzle is removed from the housing, and a second nozzle is secured in the housing via a second release member.

A mechanical stepper and method of incrementally actuating a device. An insert is placed within a housing. The housing has a cavity and a stepper sleeve located within the cavity. The stepper sleeve includes a first stop member having an equilibrium position defined by a first equilibrium diameter and a second stop member having an equilibrium position defined by a second equilibrium diameter less than the first equilibrium diameter. The insert including a first protrusion. The insert moves through the housing, and motion of the insert through the housing is incrementally restricted by changing a diameter of the first stop member and a diameter of the second stop member via the first protrusion.

Mechanical stepper

A releasable locking assembly including a housing, a body defining a longitudinally extending flow bore having a first end and a second end disposed within the housing, a window defined through a radial wall of the body, a locking segment having an outer convex surface of a first radius defined by distance from a first axis, and an inner concave surface of a second radius defined by distance from a second axis different than the first axis, the locking segment disposed at least in part in the window, and a support member disposed within the body and moveable between a position where the support member drives the locking segment into engagement with the housing and a position where the support member unsupports the locking segment with regard to engagement with the housing.

A drag block for retaining slips on a tool includes a body having a substantially annular outer surface and a substantially annular inner surface, and a plurality of drag block members resiliently mounted to the substantially annular outer surface. Each of the plurality of drag block members includes a support element and a block element. The support element has a first end fixedly mounted to the substantially annular outer surface and a second, cantilevered end. The drag block is mounted to the second cantilevered end.

A system for degrading a structure includes the structure formed of a degradable-on-demand material, an ignitor arranged to transfer heat to the structure; and, a mechanical impactor movable with respect to the structure, wherein the ignitor increases in temperature upon impact of the mechanical impactor into the ignitor, and heat from the ignitor initiates degradation of the structure.

A tubular includes an outer surface and an inner surface defining a passage. A plug is arranged in the tubular blocking the passage. The plug is formed from a disintegrating on demand (DOD) material. An ignition device is coupled to the plug. An excitation mechanism is selectively operatively associated with the ignition device. The excitation mechanism selectively activates the ignition device to break apart the plug.

A packer including a body having a first axial end and a second axial end, an element disposed about the body, and a flow passage within the body extending from the first axial end to the second axial end. The body defines a first pathway including a first port dimensioned and configured to receive a first penetrator and a second opening having a dimension smaller than the first port, the first port being located at the first axial end of the body and the second opening being located at the second axial end of the body. A second pathway defined by the body includes a second port dimensioned and configured to receive a second penetrator and a first opening having a dimension smaller than the second port, the second port being located at the second axial end of the body and the first opening being located at the first axial end of the body.

Packer and system

A settable device including a radially enlargeable portion, a force retention pathway operably connected to the radially enlargeable portion to maintain a setting force to the radially enlargeable portion, a material disposed within the force retention pathway of the device, the material retaining force when in solid form and disengaging force retention when in fluid form.

Settable and unsettable device and method

A slip and cone arrangement including a slip having a centrally located cone interconnection feature, and a cone having a slip retention feature engageable with the interconnection feature. A slip including a body, the body having a T section, and an engagement section, the engagement section having a centrally located cone interconnection feature.

Slip arrangement

An extrusion ring is attached at a mandrel end to a gage ring as well as a softer ring that is disposed between the extrusion ring and the mandrel. The softer ring acts as an extrusion barrier along the mandrel. On setting the softer ring protects a free end of an extrusion ring from contact with the sealing element by extending axially at least as far as the extrusion ring and preferably further. The sealing element being softer than the adjacent softer ring allows the extrusion ring to push the softer ring out past the end of the extrusion ring and allows the softer ring to fill a void space adjacent the free end of the extrusion ring and to the sealing element. Relative motion between the rings at the attachment location is prevented.

A downhole assembly includes a downhole tool including a degradable-on-demand material and a triggering system. The degradable-on-demand material includes a matrix material and an energetic material configured to generate energy upon activation to facilitate the degradation of the downhole tool. The triggering system includes an igniter arranged to ignite the downhole tool, an electrical circuit, and a pre-set timer. In an open condition of the circuit the igniter is not activated, and in a closed condition of the circuit the igniter is activated. The pre-set timer is operable to close the electrical circuit after a pre-set time period.

Downhole assembly including degradable-on-demand material and method to degrade downhole tool

A downhole assembly includes a downhole tool including a degradable-on-demand material including: a matrix material; and, an energetic material configured to generate energy upon activation to facilitate the degradation of the downhole tool; and, a triggering system including: an electrical circuit having an open condition and a closed condition, the electrical circuit configured to be in the closed condition after movement of an object downhole that engages directly or indirectly with the triggering system; and, an igniter within the electrical circuit, the igniter arranged to ignite the downhole tool in the closed condition of the electrical circuit. In the open condition of the electrical circuit the igniter is inactive, and in the closed condition of the electrical circuit the igniter is activated.
