A method for processing a print job includes: a) processing printer description language (PDL) image data for a select page of a print job to form raster image data for the select page, processing of the PDL image data and storing the raster image data in a RIP orientation; b) processing the raster image data for the select page to form bitmap image data for the select page, transforming the raster image data from the RIP orientation to a print orientation and storing the bitmap image data in the print orientation; and c) printing the bitmap image data arranged in the print orientation on a target substrate page to form a printed substrate page for the select page of the print job. A printing platform associated with the method includes a storage device, a RIP module, a rotator module, and a print engine.

Gray line values for each output color are determined and the values for at least two output colors are compared to the average gray level values. If average gray level value for both colors is within a tolerance for the gray line, the pixel is determined as visibly gray. Otherwise, if at least one count is not within the tolerance, the pixel is determined as visibly color. The count of visibly color pixels can be used to determine the billable color pixel count.

A PDL component receives the image and determines a location, a color and a designation for each of the one or more pixels. A marking engine modifies the one or more pixels based at least in part on the location and the color provided by the PDL component and places each of the one or more pixels as a monochrome or a composite pixel on a substrate. An analysis component counts the number of monochrome and composite pixels placed on the substrate by the marking engine, the number of composite pixels that include a designation are counted as monochrome. A billing component calculates the cost for placing each of the monochrome and the composite pixels counted by the analysis component.

The saturation level of the applicator is monitored and maintained within a predetermined range. The applicator, pre-cleaning device and metering device may be independently actuated to engage the imaging member. Release agent collected by the pre-cleaning device and/or metering device may be recycled. Debris collected by the pre-cleaning device and/or metering device may be stored and/or removed.

The embodiments provide a printer and a printing method that incorporate a printing mode capable of achieving high monochromatic quality at a low cost per page. This printing mode prints both fully saturated (or only minimally desaturated) monochrome images (e.g., black text and graphics) with no undercolor and significantly desaturated multi-color images on the same print medium. Optionally, the printing mode uses a specified resolution that is less than the maximum resolution, but greater than the minimum resolution.
