An antenna for a foldable wireless device is provided. The foldable wireless device and antenna include a first housing and a second housing pivotally connected. A printed circuit board associated with the wireless device comprises a first PCB in the first housing and a second PCB in the second housing. The first and second PCB function as first and second radiating plates respectively. A gap, generally aligned with the pivotal connection separates the first and second PCBs. A short is provided that traverses the gap and connects the first and second PCBs. Radio frequency power is connected to the first and second PCB to supply radio frequency power.

A single antenna element with a switchable extension may be used to change the size of the radiating surface and provide an antenna that has two or more separate center frequencies. The range of frequencies that may be tuned by the antenna is enhanced, while maintaining relatively low complexity tuning and matching circuitry. Switching for the extension is performed by a switching element that is located at the point of connection of the extension to the antenna element. A control line supplies a control signal to the switching element to enable and disable the extension. The control line is positioned in close proximity to the antenna element to enhance coupling between the antenna element and the control line.

The present invention provides, an antenna test device to test antenna efficiency. The test device includes a cavity formed by at least one conductive sidewall. The cavity contains at least one tuning probe, at least one movable portion, or a combination thereof. The tuning probes and/or movable portion help inhibit the antenna under test from having faulty measurements due to anti resonance or coupling.

The present invention provides a method to measure antenna efficiency using the cavity method. In particular, the present invention provides a tunable cavity that can be tuned to avoid the anti resonance and antenna-cavity coupling problems. In particular, tuning probes and/or variable volumetric sizing of the cavity are used to tune the cavity to avoid the anti resonance and antenna-cavity coupling.

Method and apparatus to control an antenna efficiency test device

A switch contact for a wireless communication device is disclosed which is comprised of a generally U-shaped spring contact positioned between a printed circuit board and a planar inverted F antenna in a compressed state for electrically connecting the printed circuit board to a feed point on the planar inverted F antenna. The leg portions of the spring contact are provided with spring extensions which are overlapped and which are biased towards one another.

A quadrifilar helix antenna of the present invention is used with a wireless device to transmit and receive signals. The antenna includes a plurality of helical antenna elements and an impedance transformer electrically connected to the antenna elements and connectable to the wireless device. The impedance transformer may be comprised of either a planar transmission line &frac14; wave impedance transformer or a pi-network impedance transformer. The antenna may also be comprised of dual band quadrifilar helix antenna for transmitting or receiving two different frequency bands.

An antenna positioner is provided for use in an anechoic chamber to enable the radiation pattern of an antenna under test to be measured. A vertically disposed and selectively rotatable azimuth rotator pedestal is positioned in the anechoic chamber and a support is mounted on the pedestal for rotation therewith. A roll-axis shaft is mounted on the support for rotatably supporting the antenna under test. The roll-axis shaft rotator is positioned outside the anechoic chamber and has a horizontally disposed and horizontally movable connecting rod which is selectively movable into the chamber for connection to the roll-axis shaft to incrementally rotate the roll-axis shaft and the antenna under test.

A quadrifilar helix antenna of the present invention is used with a wireless device to transmit and receive signals. The antenna includes a plurality of helical antenna elements and an impedance transformer electrically connected to the antenna elements and connectable to the wireless device. The impedance transformer may be comprised of either a planar transmission line 1/4 wave impedance transformer or a pi-network impedance transformer. The antenna may also be comprised of dual band quadrifilar helix antenna for transmitting or receiving two different frequency bands.

A multi-band antenna comprising a device which is capable of functioning during at least a lower frequency band of operation and at least a higher frequency band of operation. The antenna comprises an elongated radiating element having a helical radiating element connected to one end thereof with one end of the helical radiating element being received by a non-conductive insulator. An outer conductive shell embraces the non-conductive insulator and at least partially encloses a portion of the helical radiating element. The straight radiating element acts as the antenna radiator during both the high and low frequency bands of operation.
