A method of monitoring neural activity responsive to a stimulus in a brain, the method comprising: applying the stimulus to one or more of at least one electrode implanted in a target neural structure of the brain; detecting a resonant response from the target neural structure evoked by the stimulus at one or more of the at least one electrode in or near the target neural structure of the brain; and determining one or more waveform characteristics of the detected resonant response.

Systems and methods for monitoring neural activity

The present disclosure relates to a peripheral nerve electrode array that includes a first, second and third pair of electrodes spaced from each other along a longitudinal axis of the electrode array, the second pair of electrodes being located between the first and third pairs of electrodes. The present disclosure further relates to method for treating or preventing a chronic inflammatory condition in a human subject in need thereof, comprising providing to the human subject a therapeutically effective electrical stimulation of the anterior central abdominal vagus nerve or the posterior central abdominal vagus nerve, wherein the electrical stimulation is provided through two or more previously implanted electrodes at a site below the cardiac branches and above the hepatic-celiac branches of the nerve; and whereby the chronic inflammatory condition is prevented or treated in the human subject. In addition, the present disclosure relates to a method for treating or preventing a chronic inflammatory condition in a human subject in need thereof.

Peripheral nerve electrode array

A method for monitoring neural activity responsive to a stimulus in a brain, the method comprising: a. applying a first stimulus to one or more of at least one electrode implanted in the brain, the first stimulus comprising a first plurality of bursts of stimulation, b. detecting high frequency oscillations (HFOs) between about 200 Hz and about 500 Hz due to neuronal activity at one or more of the at least one electrode implanted in the brain at least partially during application of the first stimulus; c. determining one or more waveform characteristics of the HFOs; and d. generating a second stimulus comprising a second plurality of bursts of stimulation, wherein one or more waveform characteristics of the second stimulus is dependent on the one of more waveform characteristics of the HFOs; and e. applying the second stimulus to one or more of the at least one electrode implanted in the brain.

Neural stimulation is effected by a stimulus current pulse. The current pulse is initially of an amplitude to rapidly induce a desired electrode voltage, and is subsequently of reduced amplitude to control electrode voltage in a desired manner. This can effect a reduced peak electrode voltage while delivering a given amount of charge. Optimization of the current pulse may further involve parameterising an electrode current waveform as a sequence of piecewise constant steps, each step having substantially the same duration as all other steps and each step having a calculatable amplitude, and identifying electrode-tissue interface (ETI) parameters. For each step of the pulse, the respective step amplitude is then calculated using the identified ETI parameters to optimise the electrode voltage.
