A system and method that include receiving an initial on-bottom signal that is indicative of an on-bottom state. The system and method also include receiving data indicative of a block position of the block for an in-slips state and a block position for going to an out-of-slips state of a rig. The system and method additionally include receiving data indicative of slips status of slips of the rig that is indicative of in-slips or out-of-slips. The system and method further include utilizing the data indicative of the slips status and the data indicative of the block position to control a drilling operation.

Drilling control

A method can include receiving block position data of a rig prior to addition of a length of pipe to a drillstring, where the drillstring is disposed at least in part in a borehole and supported by the rig; receiving block position data of the rig after addition of the length of pipe to the drillstring; and controlling position of the drillstring with respect to time using the rig and at least a portion of the block position data for landing a drill bit of the drillstring on a bottom of the borehole.

A method for controlling an automatic drilling system includes measuring at least one drilling operating parameter applied to a drill string disposed in a wellbore when the drill string is suspended above the bottom of a wellbore. The drill string is lowered to drill the wellbore when the wellbore. At least one relationship is established between the at least one measured drilling operating parameter and corresponding values of a drilling response parameter at the surface and at the bottom of the drill string. A value of a rate of penetration parameter at surface is selected to operate the automatic drilling system so as to optimize a rate of penetration parameter at the bottom of the drill string.

Using models and relationships to obtain more efficient drilling using automatic drilling apparatus

A calibration quality associated with a well-drilling apparatus can be determined. A projected value and a calculated value based upon a data set corresponding to a time interval section of a rig state of the well-drilling apparatus can be determined. A difference can be calculated between the projected value and the calculated value. A quality indicator can be applied to the difference, and a calibration quality based upon the application of the quality indicator can be determined.

Calibrations for a well drilling apparatus

Techniques for optimizing automated drilling processes are disclosed. Such techniques include modeling a formation and selecting a drilling trajectory in the formation. Measurements of rate of penetration (ROP), revolutions per minute (RPM), weight-on-bit (WOB) and torque-on-bit (TOB) of a drilling string at a position on the drilling trajectory in the formation are received. A functional relationship between depth of cut (DOC), WOB, and TOB for the modeled formation is determined. Operating constraints defining a safe operating envelope as a function of RPM and WOB along the selected drilling trajectory are determined, and an optimal RPM and WOB is determined based on operating constraints. A cost function of RPM and WOB is determined, and a path from current RPM and WOB to optimal RPM and WOB is determined based on the cost function.

System and method for controlling drilling process

A changepoint detector for modeling data received from at least one sensor in a process in the hydrocarbon industry. The data is segmented into a plurality of segments and for each segment a model is assigned and the data corresponding to the segment fit to that model. A plurality of segmentations are thus provided and these segmentations are evaluated and assigned weights indicative of the fit of the models of the segmentation to the underlying data. The segmentation models are further used to calculate a result that may be input to a process control program.
