A system and method for virtual linking a wireless device to another device is disclosed herein. The system includes an access point and a controller configured to mediate transmissions between the wireless device and the another device. The system further includes a virtual device table and a permissions filter to ensure virtual linking between devices that have matching access right and requested services. The wireless device and the another device may have the same or dissimilar protocols.

Disclosed embodiments include a method performed by a network access point, such as a short-range wireless communications switch or Bluetooth base station unit, to provide a neighbor list for neighboring short-range wireless communications switches or network access points in a communications network. The method includes, at the short-range wireless switch, sending at least one signal to neighboring wireless devices, wherein sending the signal is done without assistance of a mobile unit or a system controller for the communications network. The method further includes receiving a response signal from at least one neighboring short-range wireless switch, and identifying the one neighboring short-range wireless switch based on the received response signal. Additionally, the method includes providing a neighbor list that identifies the one neighboring short-range wireless switch. Numerous alternative embodiments are also described.

A system and method for arbitrating among frequency-hopping spread spectrum communication systems are provided herein. An arbitrator calculates and compares hop frequencies for the communication systems of an area or network using frequency generation parameters received from the communication systems. The comparison identifies impending transmission collisions and collision frequencies for transmission time slots. The arbitrator then selects one of the radios associated with an impending collision to transmit, and suppresses or disables transmissions by non-selected radios during the same transmission time period for that frequency. Thus, the arbitrator minimizes bandwidth lost to co-channel and adjacent channel collisions by reducing or eliminating this mutual interference among the communication systems.

In a network, a method is disclosed for wirelessly exchanging communications with at least one mobile unit. The network includes first and second base stations units coupled to the network, and may include a system controller. The method includes: receiving a communication signal from the second base station unit, wherein the first and second base station units are configured to employ a wireless communications protocol, and wherein the wireless communications protocol does not provide for handoff of communications links between base station units; at the first base station unit, determining if the second base station unit has been synchronized based on the communication signal; at the first base station unit, if the second base station unit is synchronized, then synchronizing an internal clock based on the synchronized second base station, wherein the synchronizing is performed without assistance from a system controller.

A digital signal processing based feed forward amplifier includes a delay circuit which receives a portion of the input signal and generates a delayed input signal. A first analog to digital converter receives another portion of the input signal and generates a digitized input signal. A main amplifier receives the delayed input signal and generates a main amplified signal. A second analog to digital converter receives at least a portion of the main amplified signal and converts it to a digitized main amplified signal. A digital signal processor receives the digitized input signal and the digitized main amplified signal and generates a digitized error signal. The digitized error signal is converted to an analog error signal by a digital to analog converter. An error amplifier receives the analog error signal and amplifies it to generate an amplified error signal. This error signal includes a noise and distortion component which is substantially the same in magnitude as the noise and distortion component of the main amplified signal. The amplified error signal and the main amplified signal are combined so that the noise and distortion components of each subtract, leaving substantially only the amplified desired signal component remaining in the amplified input signal, which is outputted by the feed forward amplifier. A third analog to digital converter converts a portion of the amplified error signal to a digitized amplified error signal, and a fourth analog to digital converter converts a portion of the output signal to a digitized output signal. The digitized output signal and the digitized amplified error signal are provided to the digital signal processor which generates the digitized error signal in response thereto.

Disclosed is a system and method for wirelessly exchanging communications with at least one mobile unit in a network that includes base stations units. The method includes receiving a wireless communication from the mobile unit, where the wireless communication is under a wireless communications protocol that does not provide for handoff of communications links between base station units. The method also includes obtaining a unique session identifier for the communication with the mobile unit, and establishing a communications link with the mobile unit, where the communications link includes link context data associated with the mobile unit. The link context data associated with the mobile unit is identified at least in part based on the unique session identifier. The method further includes determining that the mobile unit is to be handed-off, and handing off to another base station unit the communications link and link context associated with the mobile unit, where the handing off is performed without assistance of the mobile unit.
