The administration internally to humans of certain imidazol derivatives, especially N'-cyano-N-methyl-N'-[2[[(5-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl) methyl]thio]-ethyl]-guanidine (cimetidine) or salts thereof, is an effective therapeutic treatment for multiple sclerosis, both acute and chronic. The imidazole moiety is theorized to directly inhibit spread of the virus theorized to cause multiple sclerosis. Treatment of multiple sclerosis with metronidazole with one bolus dose on a frequency of once a day or less and with cimetidine on a frequency of twice per day has been found to be highly efficatious with minimal suppression of the patient's natural immune system and minimal long term peripheral nerve damage.

Reagents and method for therapeutic treatment of multiple sclerosis

Casting apparatus for the vacuum-assisted, countergravity casting of a melt comprises a porous, gas permeable casting mold including a mold cavity and a melt inlet communicating the mold cavity to a lower mold portion adapted to engage an underlying source of melt and a vacuum box defining a vacuum chamber confronting the casting mold for evacuating the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the underlying source of the melt are engaged. A valve member is disposed on the mold in an open position relative to the melt inlet to permit the melt to be drawn upwardly therethrough into the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the source are engaged with the mold cavity evacuated and is movable to a closed position relative to the melt inlet after the mold cavity is filled with the melt to close off the melt inlet to prevent the melt from flowing out of the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the source are subsequently disengaged. The valve member is movable from the open position to the closed position by a valve moving mechanism carried on the vacuum box. The mold is engaged with the melt source only long enough to fill the mold cavity with the melt to thereby provide a significant reduction in the overall casting cycle time.

Apparatus for the vacuum, countergravity casting of metal in shell molds including a gas permeable shell mold secured to the mouth of a vacuum box by a plurality of keepers on the ends of rotatable shafts reciprocably slidable through the ceiling of the vacuum box, which keepers are adapted for insertion into and rotation within an anchoring cavity in the mold such that the keeper engages a portion of the mold overhanging the cavity to secure the mold to the box.

A method of treatment for mesenteric adenitis in humans is provided. The method comprises the administration of antiviral agents comprising pharmaceutical derivatives of imidazole. Specifically, mesenteric adenitis is treated with orally administered dosages of metronidazole or cimetidene. When the treatment is with metronidazole, a preferred dosage for average sized adult humans is approximately 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams administered once a day. Each casting mold includes a mold cavity and a mold ingate passage extending from the mold cavity into registry with a respective underlying slab ingate passage that extends between the top side and a bottom side of the drag slab and that optionally includes a molten metal filter therein. The presence of objectionable, non-metallic inclusions that can adversely affect part performance is thereby minimized in the thin-walled parts cast in the molds. The drag slab can be reused in the casting of successive sets of expendable casting molds.

Countergravity casting apparatus and process for casting thin-walled

An apparatus for the vacuum, countergravity casting of molten metal includes a bottom drag member and a casting mold member thereon engaged together at a parting plane. A valve member is disposed adjacent the parting plane in an ingate to a mold cavity formed at least in part in the casting mold member and is movable between a valve seat on the bottom drag member and a stop surface on the casting mold member to permit filling of the mold cavity in countergravity manner from an underlying molten metal pool when the bottom drag member is immersed therein and to prevent backflow of the molten metal from the mold cavity when the bottom drag member is withdrawn from the pool after mold filling and before solidification of the molten metal in the mold cavity.

Apparatus for the vacuum countergravity casting of metal in shell molds including a gas-permeable upper shell mold portion secured to a bottom mold portion and together secured to the mouth of a vacuum box by a plurality of threadable mounting sites engaged by self-tapping threads on the ends of rotatable shafts reciprocally slidable through the ceiling of the box.
