The present invention provides a method of detecting an engine stall based on the intensity of ultraviolet light being sensed in the augmentor. The method is used to confirm a stall when the gas generator burner pressure sensor is operating properly, and as a back-up detection method when the burner pressure sensor fails, or when the burner pressure line to the control system ruptures and fails.

Method of detecting stalls in a gas turbine engine

This invention is directed toward a method of doing business, wherein a first entity, referred to as the Secondary Guarantor, engages in the business of providing and evaluating financial guarantees by way of a joint venture or other arrangement with a second entity, hereafter referred to as the Primary Guarantor, authorized by the appropriate authorities to engage in the writing of financial guarantees. These entities combine to form the 'guarantor' or the 'company'. The guarantee is preferably sold by the secondary guarantor entity to an owner of a product or commodity, and guarantees that the owner will obtain a remuneration subsidy or 'settlement' for the product or commodity at the time of sale, should the sale price be below the cost to produce the product or commodity. The invention is more particularly directed to guaranteeing the owner of cattle, or more specifically the 'feeder' of cattle, an established remuneration subsidy at the time of the sale of the cattle at a price below the cost to produce the marketed cattle.

Corrected fan speed (N1C2) and engine pressure ratio (EPR) are controlled, by controlling exhaust nozzle area (EA) according to a schedule or map so that as altitude increases (P2 decreases) the axial forces on the low rotor are sufficient to minimize low rotor vibrations. The altitude band (critical load region) is determined that produces loading levels in which vibrations appear. As this band is approached, conventional control of N1C2 and EPR is automatically over-ridden. N1C2 is decreased with altitude and exhaust area is reduced, thereby increasing the axial force (load) on the low rotor. When the upper limit of the band is reached, conventional control of N1C2 and EPR is automatically resumed, resulting in crossing the critical load region rapidly over a narrow altitude band.

Normal high load operation automatically varies nozzle area to maintain an optimum engine pressure ratio (EPR). An error signal representing fan damage is established by comparing the actual EPR to the predicted EPR. Compressor stalls are also monitored. In response to these signals a minimum nozzle area is set and modified. Automatic operation to hold EPR and afterburning is inhibited. Further signals representing satisfactory operation may reset the inhibiting action.

Nonrecoverable compressor rotating stall in a gas turbine engine is detected virtually at its onset by continuously calculating corrected engine speed and measuring the compressor pressure ratio. Associated with each corrected engine speed is a predetermined, empirically calculated critical pressure ratio. When the actual pressure ratio equals or falls below the critical pressure ratio a nonrecoverable stall has been detected and an output signal is generated which warns the pilot or automatically causes corrective action to be taken.

A surge prevention system for a fan jet engine of an aircraft serves to manifest a signal whenever pressure distortions at the engine's inlet is calculated by judiciously located total pressure probes mounted downstream of the fan on the fan struts in the fan discharge duct. The engine's bleed valve is automatically opened to prevent surge and the fuel control's speed sensor is automatically reset to compensate for any loss of thrust. Safety switches are included to render the system inoperative whenever the aircraft is in the margin of stall and the reset feature is rendered inoperative for normal bleed open operating conditions.

A mailbox having a mail carrier door and an owner's door with a signal flag moveably mounted thereatop to indicate the presence or absence of mail therein. A mechanism within the mailbox has a pair of slidable members mounted to a downwardly extending bracket with a flag rod extending through each member and moveable thereby. A pair of springs urge the first member toward the mail carrier door and the second member against the owner's door. A pivotable extension mounted to the mail carrier door is engaged by the mechanism to prevent opening thereof until the owner's door is open allowing the second member to slide therethrough releasing the extension.

A double-door security rural mailbox having oppositely faced front and rear closures permitting safe, easy access thereto by the rural mail carrier and the owner of the mailbox. The mailbox has a locking mechanism including a key operated lock for locking the rear closure. The front closure is provided with a locking mechanism which allows the front closure to be freely opened and closed once by the mail carrier before securing in a locked position. Thereafter, the front closure may only be unlocked by unlocking and opening the rear closure. Once the rear closure is again closed and locked, the front closure may again be opened and closed once by the mail carrier before securing in a locked position.
