A traveling valve or a standing valve for an oil well lift pump 10 includes a piston 36 which lifts a ball 50 above the valve seat 48 to open the valve and sets the ball 50 back onto the seat 48 to close the valve. The ball 50 is contained within a ball protection shield 52 which prevents uncontrolled movement by the ball 50 inside the middle tube 18. The piston 36 has openings 42, and the ball protection shield 52 has apertures 60 which allow fluid to flow through the the valve without engaging the ball 50.

This invention is directed to an improved zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product, particularly sheet and strip, which is resistant to intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Use of such zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product in elevated-temperature service, such as found with certain appliances and automotive exhaust components, is enhanced by the coated products of this invention. The resistance to embrittlement of the zinc containing metallic coated ferrous base, when subjected to elevated service temperatures, is achieved by the use of a high-phosphorus containing steel base. For a plain content steel base, a phosphorus content of at least 0.020% by weight, preferably at least 0.030%, and more preferably at least 0.039% was found sufficient to render such zinc-alloy coated ferrous base resistant to embrittlement by zinc. By use of such high phosphorus ferrous base, for the reception of a zinc containing alloy coating, an improved metallic coated ferrous product has been found which resists intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Such coated product has extended service life at temperatures above about 450.degree. F. (232.degree. C.) and when restored to room temperature possesses a high degree of ductility.

Zinc-alloy coated ferrous product resistant to embrittlement

A drive system is provided for driving the pump rod of a deep well pump. The drive system includes a lift cylinder having a piston movable therein connected to the pump rod of the well pump. The lift cylinder piston is driven by fluid pressure provided from a motor having a piston slidable within a cylinder. The motor piston is driven by fluid pressure provided by a pump. A control valve is operated in response to the movement of the lift piston to control the flow of fluid from the pump to the motor. A pressure relief valve is connected between the pump and the motor and diverts fluid pumped by the pump from the motor when the fluid pressure between the pump and the motor exceeds a predetermined level. A vent is provided in the lift cylinder above the piston to permit the free movement of the lift cylinder piston during operation and to accommodate movement of the lift piston caused by expansion of fluid and gases in the system. The drive system further includes a fluid control valve for controlling the rate of fluid flow from the motor to the lift cylinder. In another embodiment of the invention, the motor piston is driven by a power unit which reciprocates the motor piston to direct fluid to the lift cylinder for operation of the lift piston.

Damage due to rupture or ballooning of the plastic jacket on a flexible pumping strand due to filling of the well with gas is prevented by providing an assembly including a preset pressure release valve in the lower portions of the strand to quickly release fluid from the interior of the strand to the surrounding environment upon the attainment of a pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the strand within a predetermined fraction of the rupture or ballooning strength of the plastic jacket on the pumping strand.
