A novel broadly tunable optical parametric oscillator is described for use in numerous applications including multi-photon microscopy. The optical parametric oscillator includes at least one sub-picosecond laser pump source configured to output a pump signal having a wavelength of about 650 nm or less and at least one type II optical parametric oscillator in optical communication with the pump source and configured to generate a single widely tunable pulsed optical signal. In one application, an optical system is in optical communication with the optical parametric oscillator and configured to direct at least a portion of the optical signal to a specimen, and at least one analyzing device is configured to receive a signal from the specimen in response to the optical signal.

An amplifier uses a two-dimensional array of cw diodes to produce a pump beam. A coupler is positioned to receive the pump beam. The coupler reduces a cross-sectional dimension of the pump beam and creates a modified pump beam. A vanadate gain medium is positioned adjacent to the coupler. The vanadate gain medium absorbs at least a portion of the modified pump beam and is positioned to receive an input beam from an input beam source and produce an amplified output beam.

The present invention is a system and method for mode-locking a laser, comprising reversibly converting radiation in the laser at a fundamental frequency into radiation at a second harmonic frequency, discriminating the radiation at the fundamental frequency using a polarization of the radiation at the fundamental frequency, and reconverting the radiation at the second harmonic frequency into radiation at the fundamental frequency.

An oscillator system is provided which produces a single mode output from a multimode seed beam and a multimode optical power source. The seed source employed in the oscillator system produces a multimode seed beam that is used to injection seed a multimode optical power source. The optical power source has a short cavity such that the longitudinal modes of the multimode optical power source are sufficiently spaced apart that a mode of the optical power source can be positioned relative to the multimode seed beam such that the seed beam does not significantly overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source. By positioning a single longitudinal mode to overlap with the seed beam where the seed beam does not significantly overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source, a high energy single longitudinal mode output is produced. The optical power source should have an optical cavity length that is sufficiently short to cause the longitudinal modes of the multimode optical power source to be sufficiently spaced apart so that the multimode seed beam does not overlap with neighboring longitudinal modes of the optical power source. The oscillator system preferably includes an output controller loop which serves to center the longitudinal mode output of the optical power source relative to the center of the seed beam. The oscillator system also preferably includes a tuner controller which enables the oscillator system to scan over a series of wavelengths.

A tunable laser system having a wide tunable range, and narrow line widths, achieves relatively high output powers. The tunable laser system includes a master optical parametric oscillator which generates a seed beam, and a power optical parametric oscillator which is responsive to the seed beam to generate a narrow line width, high power output beam. The master OPO and power OPO comprise gain media consisting of BBO, tunable over a range from about 400 nanometers to more than 2000 nanometers. The master OPO includes line narrowing elements, such as a tunable grating, which limits the line width of the output beam to less than one wave number (centimeter.sup.-1). Pump energy is supplied to the master OPO and power OPO using a Nd:YAG laser with a harmonic generator, so that the second, third, or fourth harmonics of the primary 1064 nanometer line of YAG can be used to pump the BBO crystals. The power OPO may be an unstable resonator.

Master optical parametric oscillator/power optical parametric oscillator

A high powered OPO system which produces a substantially collimated, low divergence output beam is based on the use of an unstable resonator. An optical parametric gain medium, such as beta-barium borate (.beta.-BBO), lithium tri-borate (LBO), cesium borate (CBO), potasium tri-phosphate (KTP), or other similar materials is mounted within the unstable resonator with suitable tuning mechanisms. Optics are provided for supplying a pump beam through the optical parametric gain medium to induce gain. In a preferred system, the unstable resonator comprises a positive branch, confocal unstable resonator. Further the unstable resonator may be injection seeded for a narrow linewidth output.
