Paper pulp is added to a stain solution. The stain solution and pulp fibers are mixed to form a slurry. Samples are removed from the slurry and are admixed with dilution water and a bleach. Then, the fibers are moved into a flow cell where they are subjected to a light source adapted to stimulate fluorescence from the stained pulp fiber. Before the fiber slurry enters the flow cell it is mixed with a dilution water of bleach to reduce background fluorescence. The fluorescent light is collimated and directed through a dichroic filter onto a fluorescence splitting dichroic filter.

Method and apparatus for assaying wood pulp fibers

A method for predicting a property of biological matter, such as biological fluid, containing water, in a dynamic condition where the biological fluid may be approximated to contain two compartments where one compartment has a proportionally larger or smaller amount of water than the other compartment having the property of interest. The method involves establishing a training set in the near-infrared (NIR) region with independent quantification of the property of the fluid using known techniques. The training set is mathematically analyzed according to a correlation developed by regression analysis after employment of a pre-processing technique such as a multiple derivative transformation of spectra or a ratioing of two wavelengths in the spectra. The result is a mathematical transformation equation which quantitatively relates spectral intensities at specific wavelengths to the property of interest. This transformation equation may be applied to unknown samples so as to predict their properties, thereby eliminating need for the reference method except for validation or recalibration. The method provides rapid and accurate prediction of the property of the unknown sample, which may be the property of hematocrit or hemoglobin concentration in whole animal blood. Other analyses of properties in the biological fluid such as oxygen saturation in hemoglobin in whole animal blood may be included in the mathematical analysis to further refine the prediction of the property of interest. Also, a loop from the patient is disclosed for the purpose of monitoring the property of interest nearly simultaneously with changes in that property of interest.

Method for the prediction of properties of biological matter by analysis

Methods and compositions for measuring the pressure of an oxygen-containing gas on an aerodynamic surface, by oxygen-quenching of luminescence of molecular sensors is disclosed. Objects are coated with luminescent films containing a first sensor and at least one of two additional sensors, each of the sensors having luminescences that have different dependencies on temperature and oxygen pressure. Methods and compositions are also provided for improving pressure measurements (qualitative or quantitive) on surfaces coated with a film having one or more types of sensor.

Surface pressure measurement by oxygen quenching of luminescence

A fluoroescence spectrometer or fluorometer for simultaneously presenting the excitation and emission spectra of a multicomponent sample in the form of an intensity matrix is disclosed which comprises an elongated cuvette for holding the fluoroescent sample, along whose length a spatially distributed spectrum of exciting energies is simultaneously directed, and a polychromatic analyzer which simultaneously analyzes the excitation and emission spectra given off by the sample along its length by producing a spectrally dispersed image of the cuvette. The matrix of spectral intensities so obtained may be converted to electrical signals by a low-light-level television detector and displayed on a video monitor or processed with appropriate analog or digital computers for immediate analysis. The instrument can acquire 241 emission spectra taken at 241 different exciting wavelengths in 16.7 milliseconds.
