This invention relates to methods and systems for determining whether a reference point in a location system has changed using the entropy of channel impulse responses. In one embodiment a method of determining whether the location of a first one of a plurality of reference points used in a location system has changed is provided. The reference points each have a known initial position and the method includes the steps of: estimating a channel impulse response of a wireless channel between the first reference point and a second of said plurality of reference points; determining the difference between the estimated channel impulse response and a previously-estimated channel impulse response of the wireless channel; estimating an entropy of the difference between the channel impulse responses; and determining, from said comparison, whether the location of the first reference point has changed. In another embodiment the method includes the steps of: estimating an entropy of the channel impulse response of a wireless channel between the first reference point and a second of said plurality of reference points; comparing the estimated entropy to a previously-estimated entropy for the channel impulse response of the wireless channel; determining, from said comparison, whether the location of the first reference point has changed.

Methods and systems for validating locations using changes in channel characteristics

This invention relates to end-to-end transparent clocks and methods of estimating skew in end-to-end transparent clocks. Embodiments of the invention relate to techniques for estimating clock skew between a free-running clock in a transparent clock and a master clock, in particular by using the timing information embedded in timing messages passing through the transparent clock. Embodiments of the invention relate to methods and systems which allow these relationships between a slave clock and a master clock to be estimated based on the exchange of timestamped messages between the master and the slave. Further embodiments of the invention set out uses of these estimates to synchronize a local clock in a slave to a master and to steer the slave clock to stay aligned to the master clock when the master clock is temporarily unavailable or the communication path between slave and master is temporarily unavailable.

This invention relates to methods and systems for localization. It is particularly concerned with localization techniques based on time difference of arrival for wireless devices. Embodiments of the invention relate to techniques in which a transmitter transmits periodic distinguishable signals which are relayed upon receipt by the client whose location is sought in a form distinguishable from that of the transmitter. Signals from both the transmitter and the client are received by at least three signal receivers which generate a time difference of arrival based on the difference taken for a signal to reach the receiver directly and via the client. Further embodiments of the invention provide a phase detector in the receivers to determine the time difference of arrival between the signals.

This invention relates to methods and systems for estimating offset and skew using linear programming. Embodiments of the invention relate to methods and systems which apply linear programming principles to links with asymmetric transmission rates which are estimated from an exchange of timing messages (for example under IEEE 1588 PTP). This invention relates to methods and systems for estimating skew based on, for example, the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP). These methods and systems can allow the clock skew between a master clock (server) and slave clock (client) exchanging PTP messages over a packet network to be estimated. In one embodiment, the slave employs a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) driven by timestamps supplied from a master clock. The slave is able to process the timestamp information embedded in PTP Sync and Follow_Up messages in order to lock its frequency to that of the master clock. In certain embodiments a frequency locked DPLL and a local free-running counter are used to estimate the skew of the local slave oscillator.

This invention relates to methods and devices for time and frequency synchronization, especially over packet networks using, for example, the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP). Timing protocol messages are exposed to artifacts in the network such as packet delay variations (PDV) or packet losses. Embodiments of the invention provide a digital phase locked loop (DPLL) based on direct digital synthesis to provide both time and frequency signals for use at the slave (time client). An example of this DPLL in conjunction with a recursive least squares mechanism for clock offset and skew estimation is also provided.

This invention relates to packet selection techniques that can be used in conjunction with a clock recovery mechanism to mitigate the effects of packet delay variation on timing messages exchanged over a packet network, particularly when seeking to synchronize the time of a clock in a slave device to that of a master clock. The packet selection techniques can assist in reducing the noise in the recovered clock signal at the slave device, allowing recovery to a higher quality. Embodiments of the invention provide techniques based on extracting timing packets that create a constant interval between the arrival of selected packets at the slave device and on extracting timing packets which are closest to making the interval between arrival of the selected packets equal to the interval between the departure of the packets.
