A shared storage architecture persistently stores database files in non-volatile memories (NVMs) of a plurality of computing nodes of a multi-node DBMS. The computing nodes of the multi-node DBMS store data blocks in NVM and each computing node of the DBMS stores copies of each data block stored on the plurality of computing nodes. A computing node that disconnects and subsequently rejoins the DBMS employs an on-demand approach to resilvering stale data blocks that have been updated in other computing nodes in the DBMS while the computing node was offline. A data block may be resilvered on-demand based on an I/O request for a specific data block from a workload running on the reconnected computing node. Stale data blocks on the reconnected computing node are not resilvered unless they are accessed by the workload.

Systems, methodologies, components, and other embodiments associated with controlling access to a storage device are described. One example system embodiment comprises an access controller configured to control access requests to the storage device by metering access to data within a first region within the storage device and by allowing unmetered access to data within a second region within the storage device.

Techniques are described for storing portions of files on different storage devices based on the devices' respective storage class. For example, different extents from a large file within a system, application, or database may be stored on different storage devices. The storage devices may be part of a single storage system that includes some storage devices that have different performance capabilities. The decision of where, within the storage classes, to store data may be based on the access patterns of the data. Access patterns regarding file extents are tracked using respective access bits, which are set when a memory block associated with an extent is accessed via an I/O operation. In one embodiment, an access bitmap is modified to account for cached blocks of file extents.

Storing information on storage devices having different performance capabilities with a storage system

Techniques for verifying input/output (I/O) command data are provided. Information about the contents of the data are specified in the I/O command. After an application issues the I/O command, a subsequent component, such as a controller, uses the information to verify the contents of the data before the I/O command is performed.

Methods are provided for communicating with and regulating access to a storage system contained within a file system. Storage access keys are used to communicate to the file system changes in location of data stored in the storage system. Fence keys are used to regulate access to the storage system.
