Systems, devices, and methods related to generating and/or transmitting sensor measurement data are described. A device may include a first conductive pad positioned on a first surface of a substrate. The device may also include a second conductive pad positioned on a second, opposite surface of the substrate. Further, the device may include an inductive coil coupled between the first electrical pad and the second electrical pad. Also, the device may include a third conductive pad positioned on a third surface of the substrate and configured to couple to a sensor. The device may include a fourth conductive pad positioned on a fourth surface of the substrate and configured to couple to the sensor. The device may be configured to wirelessly transmit a signal.

Sensing units including a radio-frequency sensor, and related systems, devices, and methods

Methods for calibration of non-contact velocity measurements and systems for implementing the same are described. Generally, the method comprises inducing a shock wave into a sample at a stress intensity that varies across the sample's elastic limit, which corresponds to the elastic-plastic state transition of the sample. That transition state may be at the sample's Hugoniot elastic limit. The velocity of the sample is measured using a non-contact velocity measurement instrument such as a velocimeter. The measurement may be compared to a predicted velocity or a velocity measurement made by another system to determine calibration parameters.

A nuclear thermoacoustic device includes a housing defining an interior chamber and a portion of nuclear fuel disposed in the interior chamber. A stack is disposed in the interior chamber and has a hot end and a cold end. The stack is spaced from the portion of nuclear fuel with the hot end directed toward the portion of nuclear fuel. The stack and portion of nuclear fuel are positioned such that an acoustic standing wave is produced in the interior chamber. A frequency of the acoustic standing wave depends on a temperature in the interior chamber.

Laser-based ultrasonic (LBU) systems and methods for measuring at least one material property of a ceramic cellular ceramic body during thermal processing are disclosed. The method includes subjecting the ceramic cellular ceramic body to a temperature cycle within an interior of an oven. For a plurality of temperatures within the temperature cycle, the cellular ceramic body is irradiated with a modulated laser beam to generate acoustic waves in the cellular ceramic body over a plurality of acoustic paths. The method also includes sequentially irradiating the cellular ceramic body using a detection laser beam so that the acoustic waves are detected. The method also includes calculating from the detected acoustic waves at least one material property of the ceramic cellular body as a function of temperature.

A method and system for determining strain impressed on an optical fiber at a possibly indeterminate temperature. The fiber () is formed with at least two sensors having different strain and temperature characteristics, preferably a Bragg Fabry-Perot sensor having a Fabry-Perot cavity () formed between two like Bragg gratings () and another Bragg gratingof a different pitch written into the Fabry-Perot cavity. Many such pairs can be written if the Bragg gratings reflect in different bands. The fiber is irradiated with broadband light, and the reflection is spectrally separated to produce separate spectra for all sensors. Wavelength shifts from two types of sensors can be correlated with strain and temperature according to predetermined variations of the shifts with known strain and temperature changes.

A system for detecting the phase of a frequency of phase modulated signal that includes digital quadrature sampling of the frequency or phase modulated signal at two times that are one quarter of a cycle of a reference signal apart, determination of the arctangent of the ratio of a first sampling of the frequency or phase modulated signal to the second sampling of the frequency or phase modulated signal, and a determination of quadrant in which the phase determination is increased by 2.pi. when the quadrant changes from the first quadrant to the fourth quadrant and decreased by 2.pi. when the quadrant changes from the fourth quadrant to the first quadrant whereby the absolute phase of the frequency or phase modulated signal can be determined using an arbitrary reference convention.

Digital quadrature phase detection

Ultrasonic surface examination, of interest in a variety of manufacturing and maintenance situations, is facilitated by a method which involves localized sensing of a surface wave by optical-fiber interferometry. The method is particularly applicable for examination of surfaces in confined spaces and wherever line-of-sight examination is difficult.
