An information handling system includes support for dynamic power throttling. In one embodiment, an information handling system includes power level detection and power control modules. The power level detection module may monitor power consumption for the information handling system and may automatically transmit power level data to a power level manager, based on the monitored power consumption. The power control module may receive power control data from the power level manager. The power control module may also automatically adjust power consumption of the information handling system, in accordance with the power control data received from the power level manager. In another embodiment, an information handling system may include an interface and a power level manager. The power level manager may receive power information for computers via the interface, may automatically compute an adjusted power threshold setting, and may automatically transmit the adjusted power threshold setting to a computer.

System and method for throttling power in one or more information handling systems

An image producing apparatus includes a photoconductor. A photonic energy device is positioned adjacent the photoconductor. A reflecting member is located adjacent the photonic energy device, whereby at least a portion of the reflecting member is operable to deform upon application of an electrical voltage in order to direct photonic energy from the photonic energy device towards the photoconductor with the reflecting member. The reflecting member may direct the photonic energy from the photonic energy device towards the surface of the photoconductor in order to discharge portions of the surface of the photoconductor to produce an image.

Apparatus provides a method and system for interfacing expansion cards having different device types to a standard connector. In this manner, the number of different types of connectors in an information handling system is reduced. One embodiment includes a direct path between the card connector and a first bus if the type of device on the expansion card is compatible with the first bus. If the type of device on the expansion card is not compatible with the first bus, then a translation path is provided between the card connector and the first bus. The translation path may include one or more integrated functions that can be selected by the expansion card according to their needs.

Encryption hardware built on a network interface card is provided by the present invention for encrypting data sent from a computer to a network. A block of data is retrieved from the network interface card, encrypted using encryption hardware, and inserted into a data packet. A flag is set in the packet header to indicate the encryption type. If the data packet is received by a system equipped with similar network interface card, decryption algorithm indicated by the flag is applied to the data using decryption hardware on the network interface card. The decrypted data is sent to re-assembly logic to rebuild the original message for the transmitted packets. The original message is sent to a computer memory via a system bus for further processing. If the data packet is received by a system not equipped with the network interface card, suitable software is provided to decrypt the data packet.

Apparatus and a method for secure communications for network computers

An computer program product and a method is presented for diagnosing hardware and software problems on a network computer through the use of a diagnostic adapter card. The diagnostic adapter card is installed in an open slot in the system bus and thus has access to all the network computer electronics and peripherals. Diagnostic programs are run and the results are logged. By analyzing these results, the source of the problem can be determined and reported for service or repair. The diagnostic adapter card contains its own processor, read only memory, random access memory, and interface logic for connecting to the system bus, a set of external wrap cables for peripheral connector testing, and an external reporting device. Some tests require use of a wrap cable to connect two or more ports together. Other tests, such as system bus timing or memory integrity, do not require the use of wrap cables.

System and method of running diagnostic testing programs on a diagnostic adapter card and analyzing the results for diagnosing hardware and software problems on a network computer

A universal bus communicates information by one of plural bus protocols. A bus protocol selector is operable to select one of the plural bus protocols associated with a device interfaced with an information handling system and to communicate information over the bus with the selected bus protocol. An Input/Output chip includes a protocol selector unit that selects a bus protocol I/O unit to communicate with the device over the universal bus. The bus protocol I/O unit communicates over the universal bus by using a bus protocol that is compatible with the device. For instance, the one of plural available differential serial bus protocols is selected so that the bus protocol I/O unit communicates with the device using a bus protocol compatible with the device. In some instances, a bypass circuit configures the physical characteristics of the universal bus, such as by interfacing or removing a capacitor with the universal bus to support AC or DC coupled bus protocols.

A cartridge receptacle receives a cartridge that features a computer adapter card. The cartridge receptacle includes a side with first and second card guides attached to that side. The first and second card guides are dimensioned to cooperate with retaining structure on an installed cartridge to retain the installed cartridge in the receptacle while providing a gap for air flow between the installed cartridge and the side. Various embodiments of the receptacle accept various sizes and numbers of expandable cartridges. Corresponding cartridges and information handling systems incorporating receptacles for expandable computer cartridges are also described.

Apparatus for securing an I/O card in a connector includes a connector having a catch. A card is removably mounted in the connector by a card retention member which is movably mounted on the card. The retention member includes a hook and is resiliently urged to a first position wherein the hook engages the catch. The retention member is movable to a second position wherein the hook is released from the catch allowing the I/O card to be removed.

A non-conductive transparent display layer is mounted in the top and includes a channel formed therein that contains layers of transparent conductive and transparent non-conductive materials. An antenna is coupled to the cable extension and is imbedded in the channel.

A method and system for protecting user data during power failures on a network-computer-class data processing system is provided. The network-computer-class data processing system is integrated with a power supply having an early power fail warning signal to ensure that unsaved changes to user data files are saved before a complete power failure strikes the data processing system. As a user employs one or more applications to create or modify data files, a table of file changes is created for each user data file that is opened by the user. This table is kept in non-volatile media, preferably on the user's network computer but possibly on a server located on a network connected to the network computer if the network computer lacks non-volatile memory. The entire contents of the table are saved to non-volatile storage in the time interval between the early power fail warning signal going active and the power completely failing. The table of user data changes can then be applied to recreate the user's data after power is restored.
