Aromatic amino compounds for carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide removal

Aromatic compounds such as o-xylene are selectively nitrated by nitric acid in the presence of polyphosphoric acid and a large pore, acidic zeolite or a large pore, hydrophobic molecular sieve. This is an environmentally friendly, commercially viable, high conversion process for the selective nitration of aromatic compounds in the para position.

Process for the nitration of O-xylene and related compounds

A process for the purification of fluoroalkanesulfonate salt comprising (a) contacting a mixture of said salt and an inorganic salt contaminant with a solvent to selectively dissolve said fluoroalkanesulfonate salt in solution, and (b) isolating the solution, to yield a fluoroalkanesulfonate salt containing less than 500 micrograms of inorganic salt contaminant per gram of fluoroalkanesulfonate salt, or containing less than a maximum of 0.3% by weight of individual solvent.

Purification of fluoroalkanesulfonate salts

A process for the preparation of diaminodinitropyridine or diaminodinitrobenzene by contacting an aminopyridine or aminobenzene with oleum and nitric acid, wherein the improvement comprises adding at least about 1% molar excess of nitric acid, based upon the aminopyridine or aminobenzene with stirring for at least two hours to form first the intermediate sulfonic acid, and then diaminodinitropyridine or diaminodinitrobenzene, and use of such products in the preparation of rigid rod polymers is disclosed.

Disclosed are processes for preparing monomer complexes that include contacting 2,3,5,6-tetraminopyridine free base in water with 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalic acid dipotassium salt to form an aqueous mixture, and adjusting the pH of the aqueous mixture to within the range of from about (3) to about (5) to precipitate the monomer complex. Processes of polymerizing the monomer complexes, polyareneazoles, filaments and yarns are also disclosed.

Process for preparing monomer complexes

A continuous process for producing hexafluoroisopropanol is provided which comprises contacting hexafluoroacetone with hexafluoroisopropanol and hydrogen to produce a liquid feed stream; introducing the liquid feed stream to a reactor containing an immobilized hydrogenation catalyst to convert the hexafluoroacetone to hexafluoroisopropanol and provide a product stream; and recovering at least a portion of the hexafluoroisopropanol from the product stream. Preferably a portion of the product stream is recycled. The reactor can be a packed bed or stirred tank reactor.

Continuous process to produce hexafluoroisopropanol

A process that can be used for manufacturing a tetraalkylonium perfluoroalkylsulfonate is provided. The process comprises contacting a tetraalkylonium halide with a metal perfluoroalkyl sulfonate to produce a mixture; allowing the second mixture to produce an aqueous upper layer and a separate lower liquid layer; separating the lower liquid layer from the upper aqueous layers to produce a product layer; optionally washing the product layer with 1 to 10 volumes of water, based on the volume of the product layer at a temperature of about 50&deg; C. to about 100&deg; C. to produce a washed product layer; and drying the product layer or washed product.

Fluorinated onium salts

A process that can be used for isolating a fluorinated alkanoic acid from an aqueous solution also containing inorganic fluorides is provided. This process comprises (A) acidifying an aqueous solution comprising an ammonium or metal salt of a fluorinated alkanoic acid to produce an acidified solution, (B) heating the acidified solution to produce an organic layer and an aqueous layer, (C) separating and recovering the organic layer from the aqueous layer, (D) optionally washing the organic layer with an acid solution, (E) optionally isolating the fluorinated alkanoic acid, and (F) further optionally converting the fluorinated alkanoic acid to its ammonium or alkali metal salt.

Fluorinated alkanoic acid purification process

A process that can be used for isolating a fluorinated alkanoic acid from an aqueous solution also containing inorganic fluorides is provided. This process comprises (A) acidifying an aqueous solution comprising an ammonium salt of a fluorinated alkanoic acid to produce an acidified solution, (B) heating the acidified solution to produce an organic layer and an aqueous layer, (C) separating and recovering the organic layer from the aqueous layer, (D) optionally washing the organic layer with an acid solution, (E) optionally isolating the fluorinated alkanoic acid, and (F) further optionally converting the fluorinated alkanoic acid to its ammonium salt.

Polyether glycols, especially poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMEG) having a narrow molecular weight distribution of about 1.25 to 1.80, or dispersity of 1.05 to 1.90, are made by a process involving distilling the low molecular weight fraction in unit operations including at least one short-path distillation evaporator. Two short-path distillation evaporators, in series, are desirable if significant narrowing of the PTMEG is required. In these units, PTMEG is subjected to temperatures in the range of 270.degree.-400.degree. C. with the hold-up time varying between 10-200 seconds. The required vacuum to force the separation of the low molecular weight PTMEG varies between 0.001 mm and 1.0 mbar. PTMEG residue from the distillation unit is also characterized by its low water content and low concentration of oligomeric cyclic ethers.

Reducing molecular weight distribution of polyether glycols by

Polyether glycols, especially poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMEG) having a narrow molecular weight distribution of about 1.90 to 2.07, or dispersity of 1.50 to 1.90, are made by a process wherein the low molecular weight fraction in unit operations using at least one short-path distillation evaporator. In these units, PTMEG is subjected to temperatures in the range of 150.degree.-190.degree.C. with the hold-up time varying between 10-200 seconds. The required vacuum to force the separation of the low molecular weight PTMEG varies between 0.001 mm and 1.0 mbar. PTMEG residue from the distillation unit is also characterized by its low water content and low concentration of oligomeric cyclic ethers.

A process for polymerizing tetrahydrofuran to produce polytetramethylene ether glycol or ester-capped polytetramethylene ether glycol is disclosed. The reaction mass is carried out at 10.degree. to 80.degree. C. and preferably 20.degree. to 60.degree. C. In a preferred aspect of the invention, a mixture of acetic anhydride and acetic acid is present in the reaction mixture.
