A dual cam phaser for an internal combustion engine, the dual cam phaser including a stator which is drivable by a crankshaft; a rotor which rotatable relative to the stator; a first camshaft; a second camshaft; and a mechanical switching element which is connected to the first camshaft and the second camshaft, wherein the first camshaft and the second camshaft are arranged coaxial with one another, wherein the first camshaft or the second camshaft is connected with the rotor to rotate together with the rotor, and wherein a phase difference between the first camshaft and the second is adjustable by the mechanical switching element.

Dual cam phaser

A valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine. The valve timing control device includes a rotor connected to a camshaft and having a plurality of vanes. A stator is engaged with the rotor, and includes a plurality of webs. Pressure chambers are provided between each of the webs and vanes. A centering slot is provided on the stator and/or the rotor. A pressure medium control valve is disposed in one of the vanes of the rotor, and is configured to not only selectively lock and unlock the position of the rotor relative to the stator, but is also configured such that pressure medium in the pressure chambers is ventable through the centering slot and thereafter through the pressure medium control valve.

A hydraulic valve for use with a lockable cam phaser. The hydraulic valve is configured to limit the flow of pressure medium to both the advance and retard chambers, while allowing a locking pin of the cam phaser to drain. The hydraulic valve effectively limits flow during the self-centering operation of the can phaser. This is important for the system function, since it allows the phaser to select a side (i.e., the advance or retard chamber) to bleed off, reducing pressure on that side, which allows the cam phaser to move towards the mid-park (i.e., locking) position.
