A method of monitoring a surface temperature of a hot gas path component includes directing an excitation beam having an excitation wavelength at a layer of a sensor material composition deposited on a hot gas path component to induce a fluorescent radiation. The method includes measuring fluorescent radiation emitted by the sensor material composition. The fluorescent radiation includes at least a first intensity at a first wavelength and a second intensity at a second wavelength. The surface temperature of the hot gas path component is determined based on a ratio of the first intensity at the first wavelength and the second intensity at the second wavelength of the fluorescent radiation emitted by the sensor material composition.

Methods for monitoring strain and temperature in a hot gas path component

An article is presented. The article includes a seal ring configured for use in an energy storage device, the seal ring comprising a first portion and a second portion that each include an alumina-based cermet, that comprises a sufficient amount of metal or metal alloy to be weldable, and the cermet comprises a ceramic material selected from a group consisting of silica, yttria, and ytterbia, and the seal ring further comprises a third region intervening between the first portion and the second portion that is sufficiently electrically insulative and of sufficient thickness to electrically isolate the first portion from the second portion.

An article includes a seal ring for an energy storage device. The seal ring has a weldable first portion and a weldable second portion. The first and second portions are electrically isolatable from each other by an electrically insulating third portion.

A lamp is provided with an axially and radially graded structure to reduce the possibility of thermal stresses, cracks, and other defects in the lamp. In one embodiment, a system includes a ceramic lamp having a ceramic arc envelope and an end structure coupled to the ceramic arc envelope, wherein the end structure is graded both axially and radially into a plurality of regions. In another embodiment, a system includes a lamp having a layered end structure with a plurality of layers disposed one over another and that extend in both axial and radial directions relative to an axis of the lamp, wherein the plurality of layers include different materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion, Poisson's ratios, or elastic moduli, or a combination thereof.

A system, in certain embodiments, includes a high intensity discharge lamp having a composite leg. The composite leg includes a plurality of leg sections coupled together in series. The plurality of leg sections includes different materials, coefficients of thermal expansion, Poisson's ratios, or elastic moduli, or a combination thereof. A method, in certain embodiments, includes enclosing a high intensity discharge within a ceramic arc envelope. The method also includes reducing thermal stresses associated with the high intensity discharge via a composite leg extending outwardly from the ceramic arc envelope. The composite leg includes a plurality of leg sections coupled together in series. The plurality of leg sections includes different materials, coefficients of thermal expansion, Poisson's ratios, or elastic moduli, or a combination thereof.

In certain embodiments, a lamp is provided with an arc envelope including a ceramic, an end member including a material different from the ceramic, and a compliant seal disposed between the end member and the arc envelope. The compliant seal includes a plurality of layers having different thermal expansion characteristics in an order of gradual change between the arc envelope and the end member.

A hermetically sealed lamp having at least one seal-material-free bond. The seal material-free bond may be a material diffusion bond, a mechanically deformed bond such as a cold weld or crimp, a focused heat bond such as a laser bond, or any other such bond. For example, the hermetically sealed lamp may have one or more endcaps diffusion bonded to an arc envelope, such as a ceramic tube or bulb. The hermetically sealed lamp also may have one or more tubular structures, such as dosing tubes, which are mechanically closed via cold welding or crimping. Localized heating, such as the heat provided by an intense laser, also may be used to enhance any of the foregoing bonds.

A transparent sintered yttrium aluminum garnet ceramic material formed from a solid-state reaction of a mixture of yttrium oxide powder and aluminum oxide powder during sintering. The ceramic material preferably has an in-line transmission of greater than 75% so it may used to fabricate arc tubes for high intensity discharge lamps used in automotive headlamps.

A system and method for hermetically sealing a lamp. Certain embodiments of the lamp have an arc envelope having an open end and, also, an end structure diffusion bonded to the arc envelope at the open end. The end structure also has a dosing passageway extending into the arc envelope. In other embodiments, a lighting device is provided with an end structure adapted to close an open end of an arc envelope, and a dosing tube diffusion bonded to the end structure. Another embodiment of the lighting device has an arc envelope and an end structure diffusion bonded to an open end of the arc envelope.

A metal halide discharge lamp comprises a lamp body and a chamber formed within the body. A pair of electrodes extends into the chamber and have electrode tips spaced apart from one another. A discharge medium composition is sealed within the chamber that generates a plasma, which generates visible light. The composition comprises a rare gas, a first metal halide that produces a luminous flux and zinc iodide that generates a desired lamp operating voltage. The composition may also comprise zinc, sealed in the chamber, in elemental form that is not derived from the first metal halide or the zinc iodide. The zinc iodide halide serves as a substitute for mercury for purposes of generating desired lamp operating voltage; and, the excess pure zinc attracts or reacts with iodine atoms thereby making available electrons and the first metal halide for generation of a luminous flux.

A metal halide discharge lamp comprises a lamp body and a chamber formed within the body. A pair of electrodes extends into the chamber and have electrode tips spaced apart from one another. A discharge medium composition is sealed within the chamber that generates a plasma, which generates visible light. The composition comprises a rare gas, a first metal halide that produces a luminous flux and a second metal halide that generates a desired lamp operating voltage. The composition may also comprise a metal, sealed in the chamber, in elemental form and is not derived from the first metal halide or the second metal halide. The second metal halide serves as a substitute for mercury for purposes of generating desired lamp operating voltage.

A lamp having a ceramic arc envelope, an end structure coupled to the ceramic arc envelope and extending across an opening in the ceramic arc envelope, where the end structure comprises a passageway communicative with an interior chamber of the ceramic arc envelope is provided. The lamp further includes a molybdenum-rhenium electrode lead extending through and sealed with the passageway. The molybdenum-rhenium electrode lead includes a molybdenum-rhenium alloy. Furthermore, the lamp includes an arc electrode tip coupled to the electrode lead inside the interior chamber.

Ceramic lamps and methods of making same

An electrically conducting cermet comprises at least one transition metal element dispersed in a matrix of at least one refractory oxide selected from the group consisting of yttria, alumina, garnet, magnesium aluminum oxide, and combinations; wherein an amount of the at least one transition metal element is less than 15 volume percent of the total volume of the cermet. A device comprises the aforementioned electrically conducting cermet.
