A display device that includes: a glass substrate comprising a refractive index (n); a display device structure coupled to the substrate to collectively define a viewing area; and a black mask structure surrounding the display device structure that is coupled to the substrate and comprises a black ink layer and at least one glossy layer between the black ink layer and the glass substrate. The viewing area is characterized by (a) a reflectance from 0.5% to 2.5% as measured at 8 degrees from normal in the visible spectrum, (b) a brightness in the CIE colorimetry system such that 5<L*<17 for the specular component included (SCI), and (c) a brightness in the CIE colorimetry system such that 0<L*<3 for the specular component excluded (SCE). Further, the at least one glossy layer comprises a refractive index (n) such that |n−n|>0.1.

Described herein are deadfront assemblies that are configured to exhibit variable transmission and reflection performance attributes. The deadfront assemblies described herein comprise a first ink layer, an intermediate layer, and a second ink layer. The intermediate layer is disposed between the first and second ink layers and is configured to reflect light that is transmitted through the first ink layer back through the first ink layer so that one or more colors of the ink in the first ink layer is visible in the reflected light. The second ink layer is configured to counteract deviations in optical transmission caused by the first ink layer so that light transmitted through the deadfront assembly is not perceptively altered in color. Overlapping regions of the first and second ink layers comprise inverse appearance attributes so that light output from a light source and transmitted through the deadfront assembly has a desired appearance.

Deadfront articles with multi-layer optical structures and associated methods

A transparent illumination system and related light guide plate is provided. The system is configured to facilitate total internal reflection propagation of light through the light guide plate despite low index of refraction differences between the glass material of the light guide layer and the adjacent layer. The system includes a light source, such as a laser diode, and an optical element to fan out light from the light source in the plane of the light guide plate. Apparatuses and methods for laser processing transparent workpieces using non-axisymmetric beam spots

Disclosed herein are light guide plates (&#x2033;) comprising a transparent substrate () having an edge surface (), a light emitting first major surface (), and an opposing second major surface (); and a polymeric film () disposed on at least one of the first () and second () major surfaces of the transparent substrate, wherein the polymeric film () comprises a plurality of microstructures () and/or a plurality of light extraction features. At least one light source () may be coupled to the edge surface () of the transparent substrate (). Embodiments are directed to systems for laser cutting at least one glass article comprising a pulsed laser assembly and a glass support assembly configured to support the glass article during laser cutting within the pulsed laser assembly, wherein the pulsed laser assembly comprises at least one non-diffracting beam (NDB) forming optical element configured to convert an input beam into a quasi-NDB beam; and at least one beam transforming element configured to convert the quasi-NDB beam into multiple quasi-NDB sub-beams spaced apart a distance of about 1 &#x3bc;m to about 500 &#x3bc;m; wherein the pulsed laser assembly is oriented to deliver one or more pulses of multiple quasi-NDB sub-beams onto a surface of the glass article, wherein each pulse of multiple quasi-NDB sub-beams is operable to cut a plurality of perforations in the glass article.

Method of laser cutting glass using non-diffracting laser beams

A diffraction element can be employed in a surface display unit to provide diffraction peaks in a manner that reduces or eliminates a screen door effect that is prevalent in pixelated displays that does not have sufficient pixel density. The parameters of the diffraction element can be selected such that the diffraction peaks provide appearance of a larger pixel area than a corresponding physical pixel size. For example, first order diffraction peaks can be placed at a distance of about &#x2153; of a nearest subpixel-to-sub-pixel distance. The surface display unit can be employed for any image display application to enhance image quality. For example, a virtual reality headset to remove the screen door effect.

A glass article having a low level of grainy appearance that can appear to have a shift in the pattern of the grains with changing viewing angle of a display, or 'sparkle.' The glass article&#x2014;which, in some embodiments, is a transparent glass sheet&#x2014;has small-angle-scattering properties and/or distinctness-of-reflected-image (DOI), leading to improved viewability in display applications, especially under high ambient lighting conditions. In some embodiments, the antiglare surface of the glass sheet is an etched surface, with no foreign coating present on the antiglare surface.

A transparent substrate having an antiglare surface with reduced display sparkle. The transparent substrate has a roughened antiglare surface and a diffraction element below the antiglare surface. The diffraction element reduces sparkle by filling gaps between sub-pixels in a pixelated display with orders of diffraction. A display system comprising the transparent substrate and a pixelated display is also provided.

An optical assembly includes a transparent substrate having a first major surface and a second major surface. The transparent substrate includes one or more damage layers disposed between a first non-damage layer and a second non-damage layer. Elongated laser-induced damage tracks are disposed within the damaged layer(s) to form at least one area pattern so that light directed toward the transparent substrate at an angle that exceeds a predetermined viewing angle (&#x3b8;) is scattered by the plurality of laser-induced damage tracks.
