A method of reserving bandwidth in a network includes the steps of receiving a reservation request for a bandwidth for a hose having one ingress point and at least one egress point, and reserving the requested bandwidth for each link in the hose and assigning a reservation identifier to the hose.

Network bandwidth reservation method

A method for allocating and resizing a link on a communication medium is provided. The utilization of an allocated link is monitored and an unused bandwidth thereof is determined. Upon request for allocation of a second link, at least a portion of the unused bandwidth is included in the bandwidth of the second link allocated. A network including two nodes and a communication medium terminated thereby is operable to provide a plurality of communication links and is operable to resize the bandwidth of the allocated links is provided. The network is operable to monitor the utilization of an allocated bandwidth of an allocated link and deallocate a part of the allocated bandwidth that is non-utilized by the allocated link. The deallocated bandwidth, or a portion thereof, may then be included in a bandwidth allocation made for allocation of an additional link.

System and method for resizing the physical link bandwidth based on utilization thereof

An optical link adjacency discovery protocol is provided. The protocol includes a simple format that includes an identifier field of a local node and facility and an identifier field of an echo node and facility. An announce message, including a source field having an identifier of the local node written therein, is transmitted from the local node that terminates the created link to the far end node that terminates the other end of the optical link. The far end node receiving the announce message then generates an echo message including a source field and an echo field, the source field having an identifier of the second node and resources thereof associated with the link. The echo field of the echo message includes an identifier of the local node and resources thereof associated with the link. An optical network for implementing the optical link adjacency discovery protocol is also provided.

Optical link adjacency discovery protocol and an optical network therefor

A method of determining end points for an optical channel in an optical network to off-load traffic from a target optical link is provided. The method includes the steps of identifying ingress network nodes sourcing traffic through the target optical link, and determining an average ingress bandwidth sourced by the ingress network nodes. Thereafter, the method includes the steps of identifying egress network nodes sinking traffic from the target optical link, and determining an average egress bandwidth sunk by the egress network nodes. The optical channel start point candidates are identified to include ingress network nodes sourcing more traffic than the average ingress bandwidth, and the optical channel end point candidates are identified to include egress network nodes sinking more traffic than the average egress bandwidth.
