Zirconia particles, methods of making zirconia particles, composite materials that contain the zirconia particles, methods of making the composite materials, and zirconia sols that contain the zirconia particles are described. The zirconia particles are substantially non-associated and have an average size no greater than 50 nanometers and may contain yttrium. The zirconia particles are prepared by a method that includes two separate hydrothermal treatments.

A system is provided wherein a plug flow reactor is used to make combinatorial libraries of materials. Examples of plug flow reactors include stirred tube reactors, extruders, and static mixers.

Nanometer-sized particles comprise a mixed oxide of titanium and antimony and are characterized by rutile-like crystal phases. The particles are easily prepared by hydrothemal processing, and may be used as colloids, or in various compositions and articles.

The present invention discloses a continuous process for the production of anionically-polymerized organic materials having controlled architectures. The organic materials may be made from one or more temperature-sensitive anionically-polymerizable monomers. The materials are made under plug-flow and temperature-controlled conditions.

A reactor system that can safely use general purpose electrical devices and unregulated surface temperature heat sources even though a flammable and/or combustible substance is being processed in the reactor or is within the processing area. The reactor system includes a reaction vessel and at least one process control device proximate the reaction vessel which is a possible ignition source for flammable and combustible materials. A shroud encloses the ignition source within a chamber and the chamber is provided with an inactive environment which is effective for preventing the ignition source from igniting any flammable or combustible substance that may enter the chamber.

Described herein is a continuous process for polymerizing 1-alkenes. In this process, which operates free of any hydrogen control feed, the resultant polymer has an inherent viscosity that is closely centered around a predetermined targeted value. If desired, the targeted value can be changed while the process is being performed. The process is carried out in a reactor that allows for essentially plug flow of material passing therethrough. Additionally, the temperature profile of the reactor is controllable.
