An optically addressed, photoconductive spatial light modulator (SLM) operates in a transmissive mode and is capable of modulating a wide spectrum of visible light. There is no pixel structure or native pixel resolution in the SLM. The SLM has no photodiodes and does not rectify. A light projection system () in which one or more SLMs () are placed includes a write (image definition) UV light path () and a read (illumination) visible light path () to form a color image projection display. The write UV light propagates from an image display pattern source () and either sequentially or continuously writes image patterns on the photoconductive SLMs. The read visible light propagates through the SLM and is modulated by an electro-optical material, the optical properties of which change in response to the image structure carried by the write light. The result is a high efficiency display system that delivers high resolution color images through a projection lens () onto a display screen.

Transmissive, optically addressed, photosensitive spatial light modulators and color display systems incorporating same

A process for forming a three dimensional decorative pattern on a product substrate uses electrostatic forces placed on dielectric fibers and electrostatic latent images written either onto an intended product substrate or onto a transfer surface, or both, to assemble three dimensional composite structures of fibers or rod-shaped components in a matrix of a second dielectric material. The fibers or other rod-shaped components may extend from the matrix to form a surface that is either plush or relatively smooth. The transfer surface may be a photoconductor with an electrostatic latent image that is written with controlled light or it can be made of a dielectric material and be rigid and conforming to the intended product substrate or flexible and made to conform to the intended product substrate.

Three dimensional electroassembly

There is disclosed a hollow reinforcing element for casting into composites, which in use defines passageways that may communicate to the exterior of the composite and that can serve as conduit arrays in structures formed from the composite. Benefits include superior strength to weight ratios, reduced thermal stresses, suppression of crack propagation, and improved corrosion protection. The hollow reinforcing elements may also be used to provide antennae, drain systems, leveling devices, containment structures and pneumatic levitation of vehicles.

Hollow reinforcing members and composites containing the same

An inexpensive, robust concrete solar cell (10) comprises a photovoltaic material embedded in and extending beyond front and rear major surfaces (18 and 16) of a matrix layer (14). The matrix layer typically comprises a high-strength, cementitious material, such as a macrodefect-free cement, reinforced with electrically nonconductive fibers (54) distributed throughout the matrix layer. The photovoltaic material comprises particles (12) of high-resistivity single crystal silicon, typically ball milled from ingot sections unsuitable for slicing into silicon wafers. An aluminum sheet (28) attached to the rear major surface provides electrical contact to one of two electrical region (22 and 24) of the semiconductor particle, and a translucent conductive layer (30) on the front major surface provides electrical contacts to the second electrical region. Overlapping electrically conductive reinforcing fibers (52) are embedded at the front major surface of the matrix layer to decrease the sheet resistivity of the surface and to inhibit the formation of surface cracks. Digitated electrode (32) further improves surface conductivity for conducting current off the cell. A voltage is generated between the two conductive layers when light incident on the semiconductor particles through the translucent conductive layer creates charge carriers that are propelled toward the conductive layers by a built-in field.

Concrete solar cell

An inexpensive, robust concrete solar cell (10) comprises a photovoltaic material embedded in and extending beyond the major surfaces (16 and 18) of a matrix layer (14). The matrix layer typically comprises a high strength, cementitious material, such as a macrodefect free cement. The photovoltaic material comprises particles (12) of high-resistivity single crystal silicon, typically ball milled from ingot sections unsuitable for slicing into silicon wafers. The ingot sections include unprecipitated dissolved oxygen that is electrically activated by a low temperature annealing process to produce n-type silicon, even in silicon crystals that include a p-type dopant. An aluminum sheet (28), positioned on the backside of the matrix layer, is briefly melted together with the silicon particles to produce a p-type aluminum-doped silicon region (22) that forms a pn junction with the n-type region (24) of the particle. The aluminum sheet also provides the electrical contact to the p-type regions. The front surface of the matrix layer, from which the n-portion of the silicon particle protrudes, is covered with a translucent indium tin oxide conductive layer (30) that provides electrical contacts to the n-portion of the pn junction and digitated electrode (32) for conducting current off the cell. A voltage is generated between the two conductive layers when light incident on the photovoltaic particle through the indium tin oxide conductive layer creates charge carriers.
