An electrode apparatus is disclosed including an electrode which forms a porous, exterior, amalgamated deposit thereon; and means for applying a compressive load to the electrode such that the deposit, when formed, is compressed so as to enhance stripping from the outer surface of said amalgamated deposit. Also a battery, a method of making a battery and a method of operating a battery including such an electrode apparatus are also disclosed.

Battery and method of making the battery

A battery cell and a method for preparing a battery cell are disclosed in which a substantially fixed volume container includes the cell components therein in voltaic relationship, with the cell components including an anode comprising lithium metal, a non-aqueous electrolyte and a cathode in a spatial relationship to the anode within the fixed volume container, wherein the cathode comprises cathode active material which upon discharge intercalates lithium and undergoes a phase transition to a distinct structural phase in which phase the cathode active material can reversibly operate and which phase provides a cathode expansion greater than the anode volume decrease upon discharge, and wherein the spatial relationship and the cathode expansion within the substantially fixed volume are sufficient to produce a compressive load on the anode which inhibits the formation of a porous deposit of exterior, irregularly oriented, amalgamated lithium grains on the anode when the cell is reversibly operated with the cathode in said phase.

Battery

A method for producing electrodes for use in secondary cells. A suspension in oil of fine particles of electrode material is applied as a film to a metal foil substrate which is then baked in an inert atmosphere at temperatures high enough to drive off the oil yet below the melting point of the metal foil substrate. Oxygen is introduced to the baking atmosphere at selected times to slightly oxidize or carbonize the electrode material. The preferred electrode material is molybdenum disulphide and the invention is chiefly applicable to the fabrication of molybdenum disulphide battery cathodes on aluminum foil.

Battery cathode and method

A battery having a layered transition metal dichalcogenide cathode in which has been incorporated by intercalation a relatively small amount of a dopant material having a relatively large atomic or ionic size so as to spread apart adjacent molecular layers in the cathode material and permit more rapid intercalation of cations during the battery discharge, an anode, and an electrolyte which will permit the migration of cations from the anode to the cathode. The preferred dopants are sodium or potassium and the invention is chiefly applicable to a battery having a molybdenum disulphide cathode.

Electrical storage device

A cathode material for use in lithium batteries which exhibits several distinct phases of operation. Cathode potential may be reversibly cycled in each phase. Phase changes occur at constant potential as concentration of lithium in the cathode material varies.
