The present invention provides thermoplastic hydroxy-functional polyesters. The polyesters have at least 10 sequential units, wherein the sequential units consist of units selected from units represented by the following formula (1) and units represented by the following formula (2); Wherein each of Rindependently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; each of Rindependently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; each of Rindependently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; Each of Rindependently represents a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; and said moiety having no fewer than 1 unit represented by formula (1) and no fewer than 1 unit represented by formula (2). The present invention further provides processes for making hydroxyfunctional polyesters, such as polymerizing epoxidized fatty acids in the presence of an onium salt, and compositions and articles that include or are derived from the hydroxyfuntional polyesters

A polyanhydride having a molecular weight of no more than about 2000 is useful in a coating composition with a coreactant resin such as an epoxy resin and comprises: (a) a polyvalent organic moiety; (b) a plurality of ester linkages bonded to the polyvalent organic moiety; (c) divalent organic moieties bonded to the ester linkages; and (d) non-cyclic anhydride moleties bonded to the divalent organic moleties.

Compositions of coreactant resins, such as an epoxy resin, and polyanhydrides that contain non-cyclic anhydride moieties are cured to provide coatings that have good exterior durability. Preferred high molecular weight polyanhydrides contain a central polymer moiety that has no more than about 25 weight percent repeating units derived from unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon monomers. In other preferred polyanhydrides, the anhydride moleties are linked to a central moiety by an ester moiety.

Catalysts for reaction of epoxides and acids

The production of esters via the reaction of an epoxide with a carboxylic acid hasbeen shown to give improved activity when a strong base macroporous anion exchange resin having an acrylic backbone is used in place of a styrene-divinylbenzene based anion exchange resin having an equivalent exchange capacity. Excellent results are obtained when acrylic acid and propylene oxide are reacted together in the presence of strong base macroporous anion exchange resins which have an acrylic backbone.
