Three-way valves having reduced leakage and fuel injectors using the same. Three-way spool poppet valves are disclosed having a spool with a poppet valve thereon cooperating with a seat on the valve housing to provide a substantially leak free valve closing in one direction characteristic of a poppet valve while preserving the advantages of a spool valve. Three-way ball valves are also disclosed having substantially leak free valves closing in both directions, but further including reduced short circuit losses due to direct flow from a high pressure source to a low pressure vent during transition of the ball from one position to the opposite position. Fuel injectors with direct needle control using the three-way valves of the present invention are also disclosed.

Direct needle control fuel injectors and methods disclosed. The preferred embodiment injectors have a needle within a needle chamber for movement between a closed position preventing injection of fuel and an open position allowing injection of fuel, a source of high pressure fuel coupled to the needle chamber to provide fuel for injection and to hydraulically urge the needle to the open position by pressurizing a first hydraulic area associated with the needle, a needle control hydraulic area having a second hydraulic area disposed to urge the needle to the closed position when the second hydraulic area is exposed to fuel under pressure, and valving coupled to the source of high pressure fuel and a vent to controllably couple the hydraulic area of the needle control member to the high pressure fuel or to the vent.

Direct needle control fuel injectors and methods

Herein disclosed is a combustion cell adapted for an internal combustion engine, comprising i) a hydraulic engine valve actuation portion capable of providing a selection of two different and stable engine valve lift (i.e., open) positions per engine valve or per coupled engine valves and ii) a fuel injection portion capable of providing a selection of comprising i) a hydraulic engine valve actuation portion capable of providing two stable engine valve lift positions and ii) a fuel injection portion capable of providing a selection of one, two or three injection pressure levels for injection fuel. The combustion cell provides more flexibility in control of incoming intake air, outgoing exhaust gas, and/or incoming injection fuel relative to an engine combustion chamber so as to better match engine operating conditions that may change over time.

Fuel delivery to an engine from a cyclically pressurizable, electronically controlled accumulator-type fuel injector is controlled by 'wasting' at least a portion of the pressurization stroke of the engine's high pressure pump so that a designated portion of the pressurization stroke of the pump does not result in accumulator cavity pressurization. Metering is effected simply by extending the period that the system's existing solenoid vent valve is open into a portion of the succeeding pressurization stroke of the pump so that a portion of the pumped fuel flows directly to vent. Additional electrical load on the engine can be minimized by using a latching type solenoid valve as the vent valve. The metering scheme 1) is more precise than metering schemes heretofore available for injectors of the disclosed type, 2) does not adversely effect injection timing or other injection parameters, 3) and requires no additional hardware.

Method and apparatus for controlling fuel injection in an internal

A pressure balanced gas control valve which uses a bellows to hermetically seal the solenoid from the valve. The gas valve has a valve housing which has an inlet port, an outlet port and a valve seat. Within the housing is a needle valve that moves between an open position and a closed position. The needle valve cooperates with the valve seat to control the flow of gas through the valve. The needle valve is moved to the open position by a solenoid and returned to the closed position by a spring. The bellows is attached to both the needle valve and the housing to prevent gas from flowing into the solenoid and contaminating the solenoid components. The bellows has an effective pressure area which is equal to the needle valve seat area such that there is a net force on the needle valve from the gas pressure that is approximately zero when the needle valve is in the closed position. The net zero force provides a gas valve which does not require additional force to open the needle valve. With pressure force of approximately zero, the force required to open the needle valve is constant over the entire pressure regime and is only a function of the mechanical spring used to close the needle valve.

A series of method and apparatus advances in the accumulator-type fuel injector art, applicable to both intensified and unintensified accumulator injectors, which cooperate to provide major improvements in internal combustion engine fuel economy, reduction of noise, and reduction of undesirable exhaust emissions, including smoke, oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons. According to the invention, injector needle closure speed is increased for sharper fuel cutoff and better atomization proximate closure and needle closure bounce is minimized to minimize fuel dribble proximate closure by reducing both mass and length of the needle, which can be accomplished by a longitudinally divided needle. Hydraulic damping also damps and cushions both needle closing and needle opening. The accumulator cavity and needle spring cavity are separated, enabling the accumulator cavity to be as small as desired for high accumulator closing pressure, while nevertheless enabling a strong, fast-acting spring to be used, both factors cumulatively contributing to good closure atomization. A two-stage needle lift is provided for first injecting a pilot fuel charge for preignition, and then injecting the main fuel charge, thereby eliminating the usual adverse premixed burning. The injection spray pattern is automatically varied for improved engine efficiency over the engine power spectrum by utilizing a pintle-type injector nozzle which is variably controlled according to the quantity of fuel delivered.

A pressure intensified fuel injector incorporates an overtravel safety feature which prevents fuel flow through the high pressure chamber of the intensifier upon injection nozzle failure, thereby preventing further and uncontrolled injection events in the event of such failure. The overtravel safety feature is preferably formed by dimensioning the high pressure plunger of the intensifier such that, upon overtravel of the plunger in the event of injector nozzle failure, a side surface of the plunger blocks a fuel inlet port of the high pressure cylinder of the intensifier, thereby preventing further fuel flow through the high pressure cylinder. The intensifier having the overtravel safety feature can be used in either accumulator-type or non-accumulator-type injectors.

A method of reducing undesired premixed burning in an internal combustion engine includes lifting an injector needle of a fuel injector a constant low-lift increment from a valve seat of a valve covers orifice (VCO) nozzle having an injection hole opening into the valve seat, and preventing lifting of the needle beyond the low-lift increment for a sufficient interval of time to inject a relatively small initial fuel charge into the engine from the VCO nozzle, the injection producing a highly atomized, wide-angle spray plume with relatively low penetration. The interval terminates when lifting forces imposed on the needle overcome holding forces imposed on the needle by a stop plate which has opposed first and second surfaces exposed to an ambient fluid pressure and to a fluid vapor pressure, respectively. A subsequent step includes lifting the needle to a higher lift position to inject a main fuel charge into the engine, the main fuel charge being injected as a relatively narrow jet having high penetration. The stop plate preferably has opposed rough and smooth flat surfaces orientable such that preventing step will occur when the smooth surface faces downwardly and will not occur when the plate is inverted such that the rough surface faces downwardly.

In a two-way utility internal combustion engine, method and apparatus employing an accumulator-type fuel injector having an accumulator cavity and a control cavity both of which are pressurized with fuel to about the same pressure, fuel pressure in the accumulator cavity applying upward force on the needle, and fuel pressure in the control cavity applying opposing downward force on the needle. The accumulator and control cavities are pressurized by means of a reciprocating plunger pump wherein the plunger is driven by cam lobe means on the crankshaft, and injection is initiated by venting fuel from said control cavity through a two-way solenoid valve. Injection mass is varied by variation of the ignition timing relative to pump plunger top dead center. Engine power output is varied between full power and idle by skip-firing, which is caused by noninjection of fuel in the engine cylinder during one or more engine crankshaft cycles during a series of a predetermined number of crankshaft cycles.
