An energy conversion cell for converting electric power into heat. The cell includes a non-conductive housing formed of spaced, preferably glass outer plates sealed along common perimeters thereof to define a closed interior volume or chamber. At least two catalytic plates are held spaced apart in the interior volume, preferably separated by a dielectric plate. The catalytic plates are preferably formed of very thin palladium plate material. A gas passage in gas communication with the interior volume is connectable to a source of pressurized hydrogen (H) or deuterium (D) gas deliverable into said interior volume. A high voltage a.c. electric power source is connectable through a high voltage step-up transformer between each of the catalytic plates whereby, when a.c. electric current flows through the catalytic plates and across the dielectric plate, the interior volume, being filled with hydrogen or deuterium gas, heat is produced within the interior volume for external use.

Hydrogen isotope fuel cell

A catalytic electrode, cell, system and process for absorbing and storing hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) from the gaseous to the solid ionic form. The cell includes a non-conductive sealed housing and a conductive catalytic electrode positioned within the housing which absorbs Hand/or Dgas and stores it in a solid ionic form. These electrodes are formed of palladium (Pd), titanium (Ti), or zirconium (Zr). Each end of the electrode is plated with a layer of gold and encapsulated with a curable resin to form a confinement zone for H&#xb1; and/or D&#xb1; storage. The process includes connecting an external d.c. electric power source to each confinement zone during Hand/or Dgas loading of the electrode to cause a plasma-like reaction to occur which drives the Hand/or Din the electrode to each encapsulated confinement to effect long-term storage of the ion form H&#xb1; and D&#xb1; in a solid form for later use.

Catalytic electrode, cell, system and process for storing hydrogen/deuterium

A medicament powder, system and method for nasal administration of a pharmacologically active peptide across the nasal mucous membrane. A free-flowing powder having a low moisture content includes a cross-linked cation exchange resin in anionic form and a pharmacologically active peptide in cationic form ionically bound together. The particles of the powder function as carriers of the peptide during nasal administration. The cation exchange resin is taken from the group consisting of divinyl benzene cross-linked polystyrene-sulfonates and Na, NHand K salts thereof. An N-saline solution is sprayed into the nasal cavity after administration of the powder to effect ion exchange of Na in the N-saline with the peptide from the resin for efficient delivery of the peptide.

Medicament composition and method of administration

An apparatus and method for separating heavy isotopes of hydrogen from contaminated water. The apparatus includes a treatment chamber with an elongated hollow core fiber (HCF) extending within the chamber. A reservoir holds contaminated water mixed with beads formed of an exchange resin, the mixture of contaminated water and beads forming a flowable slurry. The slurry is continuously circulated through the hollow core fiber and the reservoir preferably by a pulsating peristaltic pump. The beads absorb a portion of the heavy isotopes from the slurry by exchange with waters of hydration of the beads while the hollow core fiber allows permeation of only light water from said slurry outwardly through the HCF wall as a permeate.

System and method for separating heavy isotopes of hydrogen oxide from water

A method of arresting the flow of blood and other protein containing body fluids flowing from an open wound and for promoting wound healing. In the method, a substantially anhydrous compound of a salt ferrate is provided for a unique use which, when hydrated after mixing with a victim's own blood or other aqueous media, produces Fe thereby promoting clotting when applied in a paste form to the wound for a time sufficient to arrest substantial further blood and other body fluid flow from the wound. The compound is formed of a ferrate (VI) salt taken from the group consisting of H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr. However, to decrease or eliminate stinging sensation, the compound may be formed having a ferrate (VI) salt taken from the group consisting of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Hg, TI, Pb, Bi, Al, As, NH and N(C H ) . The preferred composition also includes a cation exchange material such as sulfonated ion exchange resin as an admixture which, when combined with the ferrate (VI) salt, will hydrate in the presence of blood or other aqueous media to produce Fe , thereby promoting clotting of the blood and body fluid and to produce oxygen. The cation exchange material produces a scab or protective coating over the wound for protection and enhanced healing. Oxygen produced during the reaction substantially reduces the level of bacteria, virus and fungus at the wound. The compound must be stored dry unmixed together and mixed into a paste with the victim's blood or other aqueous media just prior to its application to the wound.

Method for applying a blood clotting agent

A process and apparatus for treating the heavy hydrogen isotope content of the contaminated water by contacting the contaminated water with a molecular separation material including a support medium carrying a plurality of hydration sites having associated waters of hydration, whereby a portion of the waters of hydration are replaced with heavy hydrogen isotope water molecules from the contaminated water. The hydrogen isotope water molecule content of the contaminated water is thus decreased. The molecular separation material is preferably a polymer, such as a polystyrene/divinyl benzene cross-linked polymer, having hydration sites with associated waters of hydration. Preferred hydration sites are obtained by reacting the polymer, which has been sulfonated or phosphonated to create reactive sites, with a salt of, for example, aluminum, sodium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, iron, nickel, manganese, potassium and chromium. Before or during contact with the molecular separation material, the contaminated water may be brought into contact with a separation membrane selectively permeable to light water molecules relative to hydrogen isotope water molecules, to remove light water molecules from the water, thereby increasing the concentration of said hydrogen isotope molecules.

A contaminated water disinfectant and method including a quantity of substantially dry soluble alkali metal ferrate (VI) particles. A porous sealed packet contains the particles in a quantity sufficient to disinfect a predetermined quantity of contaminated water by oxygenation. A quantity of substantially dry insoluble inert particles are also contained within said packet and are of sufficient weight to cause the packet to at least partially sink into the contaminated water. The packet is formed of a porous sheet material capable of passing oxygen and water therethrough while preventing undissolved ferrate and inert particles from passing from the packet and entering the water.

Ferrate-based water disinfectant and method

Composition for arresting the flow of blood and method

An apparatus and method for separating oxides of heavy isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium oxide, oxides of tritium and mixed isotope oxides) from light water (H2O) which is contaminated with these heavy hydrogen isotopes such as that currently being discharged in cooling water from nuclear power plants. A central aspect of this invention includes a plurality or bundle of elongated hollow core fibers which are positioned within an elongated enclosed housing having a feed water inlet, an exit stream outlet, and a permeate outlet. At least a portion of the hollow core fibers are at least partially filled or packed with small beads which are comprised of a porous exchange resin carrying waters of hydration. Porosity is controlled by the degree of cross-linking and bead diameter of the exchange resin which is preferably combined with aluminum sulfate or ammonium hydride to form (RSO.sub.3).sub.3 Al or RSO.sub.3 NH.sub.4. By passing the contaminated water through the bead-filled hollow core fibers within the housing, significant amounts of the oxides of heavy hydrogen isotopes remain in the hollow core fiber either combined with the resin beads or collected against the inside wall surfaces of the hollow core fibers. Some of the H2O in the contaminated water permeates out of the hollow core fibers for discharge from the permeate outlet. The water which discharges from the exit stream outlet is substantially lower in heavy hydrogen isotope content. Regeneration of the apparatus is also shown.

Hollow tubular segments, preferably in the form of pretreated hollow core fiber segments, and a method, for gathering or collecting and removing an oil spill floating atop a body of water. The preferably fuel oil-pretreated segments are hydrophobic having a resulting density such that, when disposed atop the oil spill, the pretreated segments absorb or draw the spilled oil by capillary action into the interiors and remain afloat atop the water to prevent further dispersion of the oil spill and to facilitate gathering of the spilled oil filled segments. After use, the spilled oil may be drawn from the segments by heat and/or forced air, the segments then being reusable.

Oil spill recovery articles and method

An apparatus and method for separating oxides of heavy isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium oxide and oxides of tritium oxide) from water which is contaminated with these heavy hydrogen isotopes such as that currently being discharged from nuclear power plants. A central aspect of this invention includes an elongated length of hollow core fiber (HCF). By pumping the contaminated water into the HCF on either a static or a dynamic flowing basis, significant amounts of the oxides of heavy hydrogen isotopes remain in the HCF for subsequent disposal, the water discharging from the exit end thereof being substantially lower in heavy hydrogen isotope content.
