In an optical reading system comprising an optical reader and a host processor, the host processor may be configured to transmit a component control instruction in response to a user input command input by a user of the host processor to remotely control the reader. The optical reader subsequently receives the transmitted component control instruction and executes the component control instruction substantially on receipt thereof.

Optical reader system comprising local host processor and optical reader

There is provided an optical reader system that can include an optical reader and a host processor which may be in communication via a communication link. In one embodiment a communication link between an optical reader and a host processor can be a wireless communication link. The optical reader in one embodiment can receive from the host processor a trigger instruction. In another embodiment the optical reader can receive from the host processor a single frame instruction. The optical reader in another embodiment can receive from the host processor an image upload instruction.

A reading apparatus is provided for reading indicia. In one embodiment a reading apparatus can include a menuing program and an input/output device. A data source external to the apparatus having a menuing program and an input/output device can transmit reprogram requests and program data through the input/output device. In another embodiment a reading apparatus can have a trigger and first and second operating modes that can be selected by a user. The apparatus having the first and second operating modes can be configured so that a number of image representations that the apparatus stores within a certain time period after a trigger is actuated can be changed from a fixed to variable number when the apparatus is switched from the first to the second operating mode.

A programmable optical reader in one embodiment can include a program loading component and a program execution component operative to execute an externally generated program, whereby executing the externally generated program includes replacing a portion of the optical reader program. There is provided a system and method for programming bar code reading devices. A method in one embodiment includes encoding a bar code symbol, displaying a bar code symbol, and reading the displayed bar code symbol. A system and method in another embodiment includes a first bar code reading device configured to initiate a command to print a bar code symbol which when read by a second bar code reading device can cause the second bar code reading device to operate in the manner of the first bar code reading device. A bar code reading device in another embodiment includes reprogramming circuitry enabling the bar code reading device to be reprogrammed either by way of receipt of programming data over a radio frequency communication line or by way of processing memory stored image data.

An optical reader is provided that can be reprogrammed. In one method a plurality of commands are encoded into a plurality of optical symbols, at least one of the optical symbols is displayed on a display, and the at least one displayed optical symbol is read to reprogram an optical reader. In another method an optical reader is coupled to a computer having a plurality of computer programs. The computer can receive an identifier from the optical reader to determine reader compatibility, and select a compatible optical reader program. In another method, a plurality of parameters are encoded into at least one bar code symbol. The at least one bar code symbol can be output in such form that an optical reader can read the at least one bar code symbol, and the at least one barr code symbol can be read to download the plurality of parameters to an optical reader.

Portable autodiscriminating optical reader

An optical reading system comprising an optical reader and a host processor. In one aspect of the invention, the host processor may be configured to transmit a component control instruction in response to a command input by a user of the host processor to remotely control the reader. The optical reader subsequently receives the transmitted component control instruction and executes the component control instruction substantially on receipt thereof. In one embodiment, execution of the component control instruction by the optical reader has the same effect as the reader trigger being manually pulled by a reader operator.

The invention relates to an optical reading system comprising an optical reader and a host processor. In one aspect of the invention, the host processor may be configured to transmit a component control instruction in response to a user input command input by a user of the host processor to remotely control the reader. The invention is a multiterminal data collection network including a plurality of terminals and a base station configured so that each data collection terminal can be programmed in accordance with one of a predetermined number of available application. When a data collection terminal such as a bar code reader is programmed to operate in accordance with a particular application, the reader operates according to a data collection protocol that is the same as the data collection protocol of each other reader in the network programmed to operate in accordance with that same application. In another aspect of the invention, a base station normally transmits messages received from different readers according to different transmission protocols if the readers are programmed to operate in accordance with different applications, and transmits messages received from different readers according to the same protocol if the readers are programmed in accordance with the same application. A reader of the network can be associated with a new application group by reading of a specially designed application selector symbol.

Multiple application multiterminal data collection network

A process allows an image capturing apparatus to be integrated with a personal computer to continuously display a video image of the imaging apparatus. Upon proper input by a user, or automatically after a timed interval, a snapshot of the video image is captured. An autodiscrimination process of the captured video image automatically decodes any bar-coded information present in the captured image and outputs the information.

Decoding of real time video imaging

The invention relates to an optical reading system comprising an optical reader and a host processor which is adapted for reprogramming the reader and for other interactions with the reader. In one aspect of the invention the host processor may be configured to read a parameter table stored in a memory space of the reader, execute commands to edit the parameter table and write the edited parameter table back to the reader memory space, or to another location such as to a bulk storage device for use in reprogramming additional readers. In another aspect of the invention, the host processor may be in communication with a host memory space that stores a plurality of candidate parameter tables, and may be configured to read and edit the candidate parameter tables from the host memory space.
