A cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent selected from the group consisting of 1,1-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol was found to provide antimicrobial activity in coating compositions and latexes, and was found to enhance the effectiveness of other antimicrobial agents commonly used in coatings and dispersions. Alone or as part of a preservative system, this cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent in water can provide an easy-to-handle liquid that allows coatings producers to achieve improved microbial control, or achieve equivalent control while using less antimicrobial agents in their formulations. Consequently, the shelf life of the products can be maintained while reducing the use of the traditional preservative, or the shelf-life can be enhanced with addition of this cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent to an existing antimicrobial system.

A method for providing a waterborne, inorganic barrier coating to a polyolefin substrate is described. The method involves applying a primer composition containing a vinyl polymer, wherein at least 75% of the polymer repeat units contain side groups having hydroxyl moieties, to the substrate. This primer coating facilitates the application and binding of the subsequently applied barrier coating composition to the substrate.

A method and novel barrier coating solutions are provided for imparting improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to a coated polymeric substrate. The method and solutions employ a lithium-potassium copolysilicate of the formula (Li.sub.2 O).sub.x (K.sub.2 O).sub.1-x (SiO.sub.2).sub.y. For the method, y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6, if x is 1. Lithium and potassium copolysilicate barrier coatings

A vapor barrier coating solution for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymeric articles contains a metal polysilicate and transparent nanocrystalline titanium dioxide. The coating reduces interference between light reflected from the top surface of a coated PET polymeric article and the interface between the dried coating and said PET polymeric article. A vapor barrier coating solution for polymeric articles is provided which contains a selected layered silicate dispersed in a cationic aqueous metal polysilicate, wherein the weight fraction layered silicate of total inorganic solids in the dry coating ranges from above 0 to about 99 percent. Preferably the layered silicate is vermiculite and the polysilicate is lithium polysilicate. Methods for producing and using this coating solution are also included.

A method for coating polymeric substrate articles with a barrier coating that imparts improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to the coated substrate, without efflorescence or hazing of the dried coating. The method employs a lithium-potassium copolysilicate of the formula (L.sub.2 O).sub.x (K.sub.2 O).sub.1-x (SiO.sub.2).sub.y, wherein y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6, if x is 1.

A method for fabricating a semiconductor device, which involves a technique for monitoring the temperature of the semiconductor substrate in which the device is formed, is disclosed. In accordance with the inventive technique, light, to which the substrate is substantially transparent, is impinged upon the substrate, and the intensity of either the reflected or transmitted light is monitored. If, for example, the intensity of the reflected light is monitored, then this intensity will be due to an interference between the light reflected from the upper surface of the semiconductor substrate and the light transmitted through the substrate and reflected upwardly from the lower surface of the substrate. If the temperature of the substrate varies, then the optical path length of the light within the substrate will vary, resulting in a change in the detected intensity. By comparing the detected intensity with intensities corresponding to known temperature variations, the temperature of the substrate is readily determined.
