A drive axle assembly comprises a carrier member having a trunnion outwardly extending from the carrier member, an output shaft axially outwardly extending from the carrier member, a differential assembly including a differential case supported for rotation within the carrier member and a side gear rotatably mounted about the output shaft, a clutch collar non-rotatably coupled thereto and configured to selectively drivingly engage the side gear, and an annular clutch actuator for axially moving the clutch collar between a first position and a second position. The clutch collar drivingly engages the side gear in power transmitting relationship in the first position, while the clutch collar is disengaged from the side gear in the second position.

Axle shaft disconnect assembly

An actuator assembly for generating a fluid pressure and applying the fluid pressure to a first device. The actuator assembly comprises a first fluid chamber and a first piston disposed adjacent to the first fluid chamber, a second fluid chamber and a second piston slidably received in the second fluid chamber, a fluid passage connecting the first fluid chamber with the second fluid chamber, and an actuator motor for selectively reciprocating the first piston so that axial movement of the first piston generates a fluid pressure within the first fluid chamber. The first piston is disposed within the actuator motor. As the first chamber is fluidly communicating with the second fluid chamber, the linear motion of the first piston causes corresponding linear motion of the second piston for applying the fluid pressure to the first device.

Actuator assembly

A transaxle unit comprises a differential assembly having a differential mechanism, a power take-off unit and a torque-coupling device for selectively restricting differential rotation of a differential mechanism. The torque-coupling device includes a friction clutch assembly for selectively frictionally engaging and disengaging a differential case and one of output axle shafts and a hydraulic clutch actuator. The hydraulic clutch actuator includes a hydraulic pump and a variable pressure relief valve assembly fluidly communicating with the hydraulic pump to selectively control a hydraulic pressure generated by the hydraulic pump. The variable pressure relief valve assembly comprises a valve closure member, a valve seat complementary to the valve closure member and an electro-magnetic actuator for engaging the valve closure member and generating a variable electro-magnetic force urging selectively vary a release pressure of the pressure relief valve assembly based on a magnitude of an electric current supplied to the electro-magnetic actuator.

Transaxle unit with integrated power take-off unit and torque coupling device

A drive system designed to use a vehicle's existing hydraulic system to operate a controllable limited slip differential assembly. The limited slip differential assembly may be associated with the front axle, the rear axle, or the driveline between the front and rear axles. The differential assembly may also be used in combination that includes front, rear, or intermediate differential assemblies. The drive system further includes a friction clutch assembly for selectively engaging and disengaging an input member with an output member of the differential assembly, a fluid clutch actuator for selectively frictionally and variably loading the clutch assembly, and a fluid pump that is a common source of pressurized fluid for the fluid clutch actuator and the existing hydraulic system of the motor vehicle other than the fluid clutch actuator of the drive system. The fluid clutch actuator is actuated by fluid pressure generated by the fluid pump.

Drive system for motor vehicle

A front-wheel-drive transaxle unit for a motor vehicle comprises a differential assembly having a differential mechanism disposed in a differential case and two opposite output shafts outwardly extending from the differential case and a torque-coupling device for selectively restricting differential rotation of the differential mechanism. The torque-coupling device includes a friction clutch assembly for selectively frictionally engaging and disengaging the differential case and one of the output shafts, and a selectively controllable clutch actuator assembly for selectively frictionally loading the friction clutch assembly. The clutch assembly includes at least one first member non-rotatably coupled to the differential case and at least one second member non-rotatably coupled to one of said output shafts. The torque-coupling device provides the differential assembly of the front-wheel-drive transaxle unit with both limited-slip and open differential capabilities.

Torque-coupling device for front-wheel-drive transaxle unit

A hydraulically actuated torque-coupling device is provided for selectively actuating a secondary drive axle of an All-Wheel Drive motor vehicle when wheel slippage occurs with a primary axle. The torque-coupling device comprises a housing, an input shaft and an output shaft both rotatably supported within the housing, a selectively engageable friction clutch assembly for operatively coupling the input shaft to the output shaft, and hydraulic clutch actuator. The hydraulic actuator includes a hydraulic pump located within the housing and adapted to generate a hydraulic pressure to frictionally load the friction clutch assembly, and a variable pressure relief valve assembly fluidly communicating with the hydraulic pump to selectively control the hydraulic pressure generated by the pump. The variable pressure relief valve assembly includes an electro-magnetic actuator for selectively varying a release pressure of the pressure relief valve assembly based on a magnitude of an electric current applied thereto.

Variably controlled torque coupling device for on-demand all-wheel drive drivetrains

A transfer case housing includes a single-piece casing forming an interior compartment provided with an access opening for assembling components of the transfer case, and a casing cover member for closing the access opening. The casing is manufactured as a single-piece casting wherein bearing bores could be machined into the unitary single-piece casing. The interior compartment is adapted to house an appropriate torque transfer mechanism, such as constant four-wheel-drive, or &ldquo;on-demand&rdquo; four-wheel-drive, providing rear or front wheel drive (two-wheel-drive mode), or four wheel drive (four-wheel-drive mode), controlled automatically or manually by a vehicle operator.

Single-piece transfer case housing assembly

A method for manufacturing a banjo-type drive axle housing for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The first step is the operation of forming the substantially identical upper and lower half members having a U-shaped cross-section along entire length thereof with radially extending wall sections. Each of the members is metal formed, such as by stamping or forging, from a blank sheet of steel. Next step is to select a desired box-section of an axle beam portions, and a desired size of an opening in a central portion of the axle housing. Then, if necessary, the wall sections of the housing half members are trimmed so that when assembled said housing half members provide the desired box section and size of the opening in the central portion of the axle housing. Finally, the trimmed housing half members are welded to each other to produce the axle housing.

Method for manufacturing banjo-type axle housings

A differential gear assembly has a friction clutch for variably restricting differential action. A simple hydraulic piston mechanism is used to amplify the axial force generated by the electric coil and mechanical ball ramp mechanism. The hydraulic system consists of an annular primary piston in contact with the clutch pack, and a multiple set of secondary pistons are attached to the unrestrained ball ramp race. Hydraulic fluid fills the cavity between the primary and secondary pistons. This system provides force multiplication proportional to the surface areas of the respective piston faces.

Electrically controllable biasing differential

An assembly by which to effect incremental adjustments to the end play, or preloading, to a bearing set. Relatively rotatable first and second thrust rings have contiguously juxtaposed and interacting ramp surfaces. Interposed between the first and second thrust rings is an indexing spring that provides incremental adjustment of the first thrust ring with respect to the second thrust ring. A plurality of indexing pawls formed on the indexing spring interacts with a plurality of indexing teeth formed on one of the thrust rings. The second thrust ring is selectively rotatable with respect to the first thrust ring to effect axial translation of the first thrust ring by virtue of the interaction between said opposed, contiguously juxtaposed ramp surfaces. The indexing pawls preclude reverse relative rotation of the thrust plates.

Adjustable preload shim for tapered bearings

A motor vehicle interaxle differential including a bevel gear design and utilizing an interaxle differential housing having a one-piece construction. A splined input shaft extending from the motor vehicle transmission mates with the inside diameter of a splined trunnion on the interaxle differential housing to provide input torque. The interior of the interaxle differential housing includes four (4) substantially flat thrust surfaces for support of left and right side gears and first and second pinion mate gears. The first pinion mate gear and the second pinion mate gear are retained in the interaxle differential housing by stub shafts which are threaded into the interaxle differential housing wall. The stub shaft design includes a shoulder to provide controlled perpendicularity and torque retention and a recessed socket head to facilitate installation. A housing endcap is utilized for sealing and supporting the interaxle differential housing bearing and the input shaft.

All-wheel-drive motor vehicle transfer case with bevel gear differential

An inboard hub lock assembly integrated into a steering knuckle. Teeth are provided on an end of the CV housing and an adjacent flange extending from the wheel hub. A clutch member with corresponding teeth is movable between 1) an outboard position engaging the CV housing teeth and the wheel hub flange teeth, thereby transmitting drive power from a stub shaft to the wheel hub, and 2) an inboard position engaging only the CV housing teeth, thereby permitting the wheel hub to rotate freely relative to the stub shaft. A spring biases the clutch member to a 4&times;2 mode fail safe position by biasing the clutch member to the inboard non-engaging position.

Integral knuckle and hub lock

A novel arrangement of a hydraulic actuator assembly is disclosed. The hydraulic actuator assembly comprises a bi-directional electric motor driving a drive screw. A shaft coupler is threaded onto the drive screw. The shaft coupler is splined to a stationary coupler retainer to prevent rotational movement thereof. The shaft coupler is connected to a hydraulic piston slidably mounted within a pressure chamber by a compression spring. The spring functions both as a damper and as accumulator in a hydraulic system to help stabilize hydraulic pressure. An electrical control system for the hydraulic actuator comprises a high-pressure cutoff switch, a low-pressure cutoff switch, and a control switch. The control switch is adapted for activating the hydraulic actuator assembly and selecting desired operation mode.

Hydraulic actuator assembly with integral damper/accumulator

An integrated wheel end assembly for a vehicle including a wheel hub, a stub shaft, a torque flange and a bi-directional overrunning clutch member is configured such that the clutch automatically acts as a hub lock. The wheel hub is drivingly engaged to a drive flange mounted at an inboard end thereof. An outer circumference of the drive flange has a plurality of external teeth spaced evenly therearound. An outboard end of the stub shaft is rotatingly supported in the wheel hub and an inboard end thereof defines a housing for a CV joint. This CV housing and the drive flange are positioned axially adjacent to each other. The bi-directional overrunning clutch member comprises two clutch plates, one drivingly connected to the CV housing and the other drivingly connected to the drive flange. In a first configuration the clutch plates are disengaged such that the rotating CV housing causes only the corresponding clutch plate to rotate and no drive torque is transferred from the half shaft to the wheel hub. In a second configuration the clutch plates are engaged so as to co-rotate and drive torque is transferred from the half shaft to the wheel hub through the engagement. The clutch utilizes its overrunning feature to disengage the clutch plates when the wheel is rotating faster that the drive shaft and automatically engages when the rotational speed of the wheel equals that of the drive shaft.

Wheel end with bi-directional overrunning clutch

An improved wheel end assembly integrates into the steering knuckle a feature for providing driving engagement/disengagement of a wheel to convert between driven and non-driven modes of wheel movement. Such a wheel end assembly receives drive torque from a half shaft through a constant velocity (&ldquo;CV&rdquo;) joint. The wheel end assembly has the steering knuckle, which is coupled to the vehicle and which integrally houses a hub lock actuator assembly. A bearing assembly mounted to the knuckle allows for free rotation of a cylindrical wheel hub mounted thereon about a central axis of the hub. The wheel hub has a flange for mounting the wheel at an outboard end thereof and a drive flange at an inboard end thereof, an outer circumference of the flange having a plurality of external teeth spaced evenly therearound. A stub shaft has an outboard end thereof rotatingly supported in the wheel hub and an inboard end thereof defining a housing for the CV joint, the housing having a plurality of external teeth identical in size and number to the teeth on the drive flange. The housing and the flange are axially adjacent to each other. A clutch member with internal teeth sized and adapted for engaging the external teeth on the housing and the drive flange is slidable axially between a first position in which the clutch member teeth engage only the CV housing teeth and no drive torque is transferred from the half shaft to the wheel hub and a second position in which the clutch teeth engage both the CV housing teeth and the drive flange teeth and drive torque is transferred from the half shaft to the wheel hub through the engagement. The hub lock actuator assembly moves the clutch member selectively between the first and second positions.
